Yeshe So. The sixth merit is: As just mentioned, all those faults will never occur to those who abide properly in the four immeasurables such as loving-kindness. Because those who possess the four immeasurables, with the power of wisdom, are not defiled by afflictions such as attachment, although they are not afflicted, they do not completely abandon samsara for the benefit of other sentient beings out of compassion, but rather take birth in samsara and ripen sentient beings. Just as the sons of the Buddhas benefit all sentient beings with the mind of the four immeasurables such as loving-kindness, this does not occur in all ordinary sentient beings, and even parents, for their virtuous only child, in suffering and poverty, cannot generate such loving-kindness as that of a Bodhisattva. Second, the distinctions of compassion are divided into nine types, the first, the objects of compassion are ten types: For those in the desire realm whose desire is intensely blazing for the five desirable qualities, Bodhisattvas think: Alas! These sentient beings are insatiable, the fire of desire is intensely blazing, and they are made powerless, thus generating intense compassion. Similarly, compassion also arises for those who have embarked on doing good, but have been obstructed by the enemy, Mara, and have become subject to its power, abandoning the doing of good. Intense compassion arises when focusing on sentient beings who are born in the three lower realms and experience unbearable feelings, and those who are in the higher realms but are oppressed by suffering such as birth, aging, sickness, and death. Compassion arises for sentient beings who engage in the causes of suffering, misconduct of body, speech, and mind, such as engaging in killing, and who are obscured by the darkness of not knowing that the result of that is the suffering of hell and so on, such as butchers, hunters, and thieves who commit evil. Compassion arises for those who do not at all believe in the path of liberation, individuals who have cut off their lineage, because they wander in endless samsara and have entered a path that is difficult to traverse. Compassion arises for those non-Buddhists who have turned away from this teaching, who have views of self and what belongs to self, and who are truly bound by various kinds of evil views.

Merely considering liberation and happiness and savoring attachment is like being attached to eating delicious food mixed with deadly poison. Although it feels pleasant temporarily, it is ultimately of a decaying nature, thus unable to escape samsara. Compassion arises towards such sentient beings. Those non-Buddhists who, in order to attain liberation, torment themselves with five fires or jump off cliffs, etc., seeing distorted precepts and asceticism as the path and seeking liberation, have completely lost the true path. Therefore, great compassion arises towards them. Those of uncertain Śrāvaka and Bodhisattva lineage, entering the path of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, although entering the path of liberation, deviate from the Mahāyāna path of accomplishing both self and others' benefit. Compassion arises towards those who have fully entered the inferior path. Those who have entered the Mahāyāna path but lack conducive conditions or are seized by adverse conditions, unable to practice the path properly, compassion arises towards those sentient beings of weak strength. Thus, the compassion that arises based on the ten objects of focus also becomes ten kinds of distinctions. Secondly, what fruit is obtained by focusing compassion on sentient beings? Those who possess compassion completely abandon harming actions such as beating and scolding sentient beings, which is the fruit of separation. Accumulating the two accumulations that become the seed of supreme enlightenment is the fruit of ownership. Bringing happiness free from suffering to other sentient beings, and for their sake, enduring various sufferings such as heat, cold, and fatigue, is the fruit of the actions of a great person. Those who possess compassion will be born wherever they wish to be born, creating the cause as they desire, which is the fruit of maturation. Having become accustomed to compassion in previous lives, compassion also increases in future lives and arises continuously, which is the giving of the nature or essence of compassion, the fruit of constant continuity. Relying on these five qualities of compassion, the sons of the Victorious Ones will not be far from attaining unsurpassed enlightenment and will quickly attain it. Thirdly, the activity of compassion endowed with wisdom is: the Bodhisattva, great compassion

With the power of supreme wisdom endowed with intelligence, knowing all internal and external phenomena belonging to the three realms of samsara as impermanent and the three aspects of suffering, and further dividing them into the nature of suffering in countless ways, and knowing that these phenomena are empty and without self, therefore one will not be weary of the suffering of samsara, but will act for the benefit of others with compassion. Because wisdom knows that samsara has no inherent nature, one will not be severely harmed by the faults of samsara, such as the suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death, and afflictions such as attachment and hatred. Viewing the suffering of all beings in the world as similar to one's own suffering, this is the aspect of having loving-kindness towards others. Furthermore, knowing the method of eliminating suffering, that the cause of suffering is the origin, therefore, in order to truly know and realize its antidote, the path and cessation, one will not be indifferent to the suffering of others, but will be compassionate and feel distressed. However, because one knows the method of eliminating suffering, one will not be discouraged by suffering. Fourth, the classification of compassion is: the loving-kindness of a Bodhisattva who possesses the nature of compassion, naturally, that is, becoming one who possesses the nature of compassion due to the power of lineage; and the merits of compassion and the faults of not having compassion; sentient beings wandering helplessly in the three sufferings; and that they have become one's own relatives and friends countless times; although all beings are the same in desiring happiness and not wanting suffering, the desire and practice are reversed and confused, etc., separately examining the methods of cultivating compassion, and possessing the compassion that has been previously cultivated, and the pure compassion that has declined from the unfavorable aspects of harmful intent, harm, etc., there are four types in total. The latter refers to obtaining the compassion free from desire, in which attachment and hatred do not arise towards anything. Thus, there are four types: nature, separate examination, cultivation, and obtaining freedom from desire. Fifth, explaining the distinction of great compassion, divided into two parts: the actual explanation and showing its greatness through examples. First, without equal compassion, it is not great compassion.
