So, what is the compassion like of ordinary beings, Shravakas, and Pratyekabuddhas? They generate compassion for sentient beings who manifest the suffering of pain, but they do not generate compassion for those who have feelings of happiness and equanimity, because it is not universal, so it is not great compassion. Bodhisattvas, however, regard whatever contaminated feelings of pleasure, pain, and equanimity they experience as not having transcended the three sufferings. Just as they have compassion for sentient beings in Avici Hell, they generate compassion equally for sentient beings up to the peak of existence, so it is called the great compassion of equanimity. Sometimes compassion arises, and sometimes it does not, like the compassion of ordinary beings. Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas also have only compassion for sentient beings, but in the state of nirvana without remainder, it is exhausted and cut off, because it is not constant, so it is not called great compassion. The compassion of Bodhisattvas arises continuously in all stages of the path of learning, and even when they enter the realm of nirvana without remainder, it is a constant compassion that never ends, so it is great compassion. What is compassion that is not based on the extraordinary intention of taking on the burden of benefiting others? Worldly people mix it with their own benefit, and generate compassion for friends and so on, whom they hold as their own, and only have compassion for those who help them. Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, because they realize the equality of self and others, do not have the thought of taking on the burden of benefiting others, so their compassion is not called great compassion. Bodhisattvas, from the time they attain the first bhumi, directly realize the nature of the equality of self and others, and from the point of view of intention, there is no difference between benefiting themselves and benefiting others, and the compassion that has the extraordinary intention of taking on the burden of benefiting others is great compassion. For those who see sentient beings suffering and only have a feeling of love, but lack the means to actually accomplish the task of saving them from suffering, this is not great compassion. Just as Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas also only have compassion for all sentient beings suffering, but do not actually work to save them from suffering. Bodhisattvas will think until the end of samsara.

They possess great compassion because they work to benefit and bring happiness to sentient beings. Although there is love for sentient beings, it is not always the case, and sometimes anger arises. There is anger towards enemies, so they have not separated from afflictions. Although Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not have actual anger, their compassion cannot be called great compassion because they have not abandoned the subtle imprints of it. The great compassion of Bodhisattvas is great compassion because it is separated from the latent habits of anger and harm, which are the opposing factors of compassion, and from attachment. Although there is compassion, it is not great compassion because it does not fixate on the characteristics of the three spheres of compassion. Possessing non-conceptual wisdom, that is great compassion. Although some believe that this refers to the stage when non-conceptual wisdom is fully matured from the eighth ground onwards, there is no contradiction even if it is applied to general Bodhisattva Arya beings. Thus, the great compassion of Bodhisattvas is explained. Such ultimate, spontaneously accomplished, objectless great compassion is called the great compassion of the Buddha in the Buddha-field. Compassion and loving-kindness are the same word with different honorific usages, and the meaning is the same, but the distinction of "great" is to be understood as explained just now. Thus, the six aspects of non-equality and non-permanence, etc., are not love, and great compassion is the opposite of that, possessing the characteristics of the six. Just as it was said just now, one who does not have great love is not called a Bodhisattva possessing great compassion. Second, illustrating the greatness of great compassion with an analogy, namely the five verses beginning with "compassion and patience." For example, just as a good tree has six parts: roots, trunk, branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits. Similarly, the great compassion of the example also has: great compassion that wishes to save all sentient beings from suffering, and from that, patience in undertaking various difficulties for the benefit of others, and the intention to manifest various means to benefit sentient beings, and the body, resources, and retinue that benefit sentient beings in all lifetimes.
