With such aspirations, may we completely dedicate ourselves to cultivating the right path and realizing the meaning of Dharma nature. Fifth, the cause is the joy of the virtuous spiritual friend, which is the cause of teaching the Dharma and making the teachings meaningful. A good disciple with a stable mind, who practices as taught by the virtuous spiritual friend, truly delights the heart of that virtuous spiritual friend. Sixth, wisdom is gained by hearing the Dharma from a virtuous spiritual friend, becoming proficient in the three vehicles of hearers, solitary realizers, and bodhisattvas. Realizing the three vehicles through one's own wisdom is obtaining wisdom by relying on a virtuous spiritual friend. Having become proficient in the three vehicles in this way, bodhisattvas do not practice the vehicles of hearers and solitary realizers. Their own vehicle is the Great Vehicle, and they strive to accomplish the benefit of both themselves and others, and to attain the fruit of great enlightenment. Seventh, purifying the Buddha-field is relying on a virtuous spiritual friend, in order to completely purify the sentient beings within, and to fully ripen limitless beings through listening to the Dharma and so on. In order to completely purify the external world, and to make the Buddha-field possess the complete qualities of a precious ground, wish-fulfilling trees, nectar rivers, and so on, one relies on a spiritual friend and listens to the Dharma in order to completely purify the pure Buddha-field. Eighth, the place is where the mind abides, like when parents or siblings divide common property, each taking what they need. Bodhisattvas rely on spiritual friends in order to have the merit of enjoying the share of the supreme Dharma, not to enjoy the share of worldly things. Because some bodhisattvas who are bound by worldly things do not prioritize the Dharma, but listen to the Dharma for worldly reasons, this is not from the perspective of the place. Second, the difference in reliance is that a wise person's reliance on a spiritual friend has differences in cause and effect. Relying on a virtuous spiritual friend in a previous life is the cause.

Presently relying is the fruit, presently relying is the cause, and relying in future lives is the fruit. Thus, there are three ways of relying on spiritual friends: in the past, present, and future. Having relied on a virtuous spiritual friend, practicing according to their instructions and following their guidance, obtaining the samadhi of the door of Dharma, and following it, or being in accordance with their realization and following it, relying on virtuous spiritual friends, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, is the internal reliance. Relying through obtaining virtuous spiritual friends, etc., is the external reliance. Relying merely through listening to the sound of the Dharma heard from a virtuous spiritual friend is coarse or rough, because the mind wanders outward only on other sounds. The yoga of the mind accompanied by thought and meditation-born mind is subtle or fine, because the mind thinks inward on the meaning. Furthermore, regarding this, serving with reverence, etc., accompanied by clinging to reality, is inferior with arrogance. Not clinging to the characteristics of the three actions of oneself and relying on the spiritual friend, relying on the spiritual friend with a mind free of arrogance is called supreme. The intelligent one relies on the spiritual friend, from the way of going, there are two: near and far; from the way of combining, there are these two; and from the way of aspiration, there are these two, so there are six distinctions of relying on the spiritual friend. What are they? Relying by going in this life is near. Relying after being interrupted by many lifetimes of going is far. In terms of combination, even in this life, relying at another time later, or even in another life, not relying immediately, but combining to rely after being interrupted by many lifetimes is far, while combining to rely in this life right now, and combining to rely in the next life immediately is near. Aspiration is also the same. Making aspirations and relying to rely in this very life is near, while aspiring to rely in the next life is far. These three are merely distinctions of strength and weakness in terms of basis, combination, practice, and aspiration with thought. The third, the supreme reliance, is to rely on the supreme spiritual friend with one's own mind, to rely from the way of devotion to the Dharma of the Great Vehicle, and to combine the nine intentions mentioned above with reliance, know that
