Those who are thoroughly versed in the ground are the afflictions of the mind. Greed, malice, and wrong views, etc., all arise from the three poisons of attachment, aversion, and ignorance. How should one accept them? One should understand by sequentially connecting them, such as giving away all of one's possessions to others, then one should not be greedy for the possessions of others, etc. Pure patience is when a compassionate Bodhisattva, at any time, is harmed by others, or suffers for the benefit of others, thinking, "This is the cause of enlightenment, the means of perfecting patience," without generating thoughts of the harmer or suffering, but instead generating thoughts of the benefit and happiness of the benefactor, and gaining joy. Such a Bodhisattva, towards an unbearable object, what is difficult to endure? Because he has no unbearable thought, just as a fish enters water, or a wild animal enters fire with a cool sound, there is nothing unbearable. Pure diligence is when Bodhisattvas, free from the thought of others as other, realize the equality of self and other, and even though they themselves have realized the meaning of the equality of self and other, they still focus on other sentient beings who have not realized it in this way, and constantly love other sentient beings more than themselves, and because they practice countless austerities for the benefit of sentient beings, they possess great compassion. Such practice of vast diligence for the benefit of others is not a small austerity. With the thought of cherishing others more than oneself, practicing austerities for the benefit of others is extremely difficult for other worldly beings, Hearers, and Solitary Realizers. Pure concentration is when the concentration of worldly beings, Hearers, and Solitary Realizers is small in happiness compared to the concentration of Bodhisattvas, that is, the happiness of worldly beings with outflows, and the concentration of Hearers and Solitary Realizers is without outflows, only satisfying their own continuum, not making others feel peaceful. Worldly beings desire the happiness of samsara because of their attachment to self, and Hearers and Solitary Realizers desire the happiness of nirvana alone, worldly beings are attached to samsara, and Hearers and Solitary Realizers are attached to peace, and the happiness of worldly concentration will eventually decline.

The meditation of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas will exhaust the realm of no remainder of aggregates, worldly people have not abandoned both obscurations, and Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas are considered ignorant because they have not abandoned the obscuration of knowledge. The meditation of Bodhisattvas is the opposite of that. The meditation of the Great Vehicle has immeasurable happiness that is vast and abundant, engages in benefiting others, has no attachment to samsara and nirvana with non-discriminating wisdom, arises in all lifetimes and does not decline, does not exhaust even in the realm of no remainder of aggregates, and is not ignorant because it abandons both obscurations, possessing these six distinctions. The qualities of pure wisdom are: For example, the wisdom of listening, thinking, and meditating of worldly people is like searching for things in the dark without light, groping and feeling with their hands, not directly knowing the suchness of things such as impermanence and suffering, but only measuring through inference. The wisdom of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas is like a lamp inside a cover. If a lamp is placed in a box, room, or cave, it is like only illuminating a part of it, only realizing that there is no self of a person in the five aggregates of one's own continuum, and thus it is only the wisdom that eliminates afflictions. Similarly, the third wisdom, the wisdom of a compassionate Bodhisattva, is like the rays of the sun, illuminating all directions, and is unparalleled, because it fully realizes the two selflessnesses of suchness and the allness, and knows all the dharmas of defilement and purification without mixing them. Therefore, it can abandon the two obscurations and realize the two truths. Second, the merit of generosity and so on becoming supreme is: The basis of generosity and the foundation and so on are explained by six verses. Each of the six perfections of generosity and so on has eight kinds of excellence, so it is supreme. The eight kinds of excellence are: excellent basis, excellent foundation or object, excellent reason, excellent dedication, excellent cause, excellent wisdom, excellent field, and excellent abiding. Because it has these eight excellences, it is transcendent, sacred, and has excellent qualities. Among them, generosity is: The giver of generosity is not like ordinary people and Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, but a Bodhisattva, so it is an excellent basis.
