Placement is of great significance. Because meditative wisdom is fully possessed, it is inexhaustibly established in the world, which is the merit of inexhaustibility. The sons of the Buddhas know in every way the suchness of reality and all that is knowable, which is the merit of vastness. If one does not generate strong attachment to nirvana, what need is there to mention samsara? Because all appearances of samsara and nirvana are understood as illusory in conventional truth, and as equality in ultimate truth. This is the merit of being unmingled. By that very wisdom, all beings are placed in the three enlightenments, which is the merit of great significance. Since that wisdom does not abide at the edge of the four existences, its essence is inseparable from great compassion, and therefore it completely takes hold of sentient beings, establishing them inexhaustibly in the world, which is the merit of inexhaustibility because it is never interrupted and pervasive. Thus, vastness, unmingledness, great significance, and inexhaustibility should be understood as the four merits of all things, such as generosity. Again, from the way the six perfections are distinguished by their purity, and the way they are shown to be supreme, and the way they are indicated by the praise of generosity, and the four ways of explaining the merit of diligence in detail, the first is shown from seeing the beggar complete, etc., to being incomparable like the rays of the sun. First, the praise of generosity is: the beggar is happy when he sees the giver, and he is happy when he sees that the giving is completed as he wishes, and he is unhappy when he does not see the giver and the giving is not completed, and he always longs in his heart to see the giver and to have him completely fulfill his wish to give to him. The Bodhisattva giver has love for sentient beings, so he is happy when he sees the beggar and the giving is completed, and he is unhappy when he is separated from these two, and he longs to see the beggar and to have the giving completed to him. These three are more intense than the beggar's joy, etc., so these three of the beggar are always overwhelmed. The beggar is happy to see the giver giving, but even more intense than that is the Bodhi-

A Bodhisattva rejoices upon seeing a beggar, and the joy of the beggar upon receiving the gift and having his wishes completely fulfilled is greater than the joy of the Bodhisattva in giving completely. Therefore, the pure giving of a Bodhisattva is particularly excellent. The merit of pure morality is: With loving-kindness towards sentient beings, a Bodhisattva who always gives away his own life, possessions, and wives without the slightest displeasure, and is extremely happy, how could he not protect against others killing, stealing, and engaging in sexual misconduct for his own sake? Therefore, he possesses the pure morality of abandoning the three unwholesome actions of the body. A noble Bodhisattva does not even consider his own body and life, has equanimity towards sentient beings, is free from the five fears, and is not afraid of the king's punishment, etc. Because he has compassion for all living beings, and gives away all that he owns, how could he deceive and harm others, and speak false and untrue words? Lying is either for the sake of one's own body and life, or for the sake of loved ones, or out of imbalance of mind to harm enemies, or out of fear of kings and thieves, or out of fear of losing one's wife and wealth. But because a Bodhisattva does not have these reasons, it is impossible for him to lie. Similarly, because he is a loving person who wishes to equally benefit all sentient beings, because he is very afraid of the suffering of others and wishes that they would not suffer, and because he is single-mindedly devoted to subduing the afflictions of sentient beings, therefore, in the order mentioned above, he is very far from the three faults of speech: divisive speech caused by the imbalance of loving and unloving minds, harsh words wishing suffering on others, and frivolous talk that increases afflictions. He gives away all possessions and has great compassion for others.
