bathing the body, and predictions by the Buddha, etc., and like the dream signs of obtaining the ten grounds from the ten grounds, etc., like that, the reasons or signs for obtaining the grounds, even those that have not been specifically examined, are clearly seen, this is the fourth. These two are signs arising from higher vision. Similarly, in order to perfect the ultimate realization of the Dharmakaya, and to completely purify the two obscurations to be abandoned, the wise one, in all states of equipoise and subsequent attainment, constantly holds the cause of ultimate abandonment and realization, this is the fifth. This is a part of both Shamatha and Vipassana. In the commentary of "Blo brtan," the exhaustion of the afflictions of body and mind, and the body being pervaded by the bliss of physical pliancy, and the mind being pervaded by the bliss of mental pliancy, are enumerated separately, and the uninterrupted appearance of Dharma, and seeing the true reason, are explained as five benefits for the five. It is said that holding the cause of perfecting the Dharmakaya and obtaining purity is to hold all aspects. Here, as stated in the "Compendium of Vehicles," the five benefits are explained as above. From the beginning of the chapter on instructions, up to this point, the explanation of the five qualities is to show how individual Bodhisattvas obtain the Dharma and qualities while abiding on the ground of practice through aspiration. Third, the way to travel the path from there. From "From there, becoming like that" to "obtaining the unsurpassed state," it is shown that from there, having obtained special Shamatha and Vipassana, becoming such a Bodhisattva, abiding single-pointedly in Samadhi, without anything other than mental expression or conceptualization, not seeing at all that external things are separate from the mind, this is the time of obtaining the warmth sign. In order to greatly increase the appearance of Dharma that has been obtained, the Bodhisattva constantly exerts stable effort, this is the time of the peak of the appearance spreading or expanding. Having exerted effort in this way, after the appearance of Dharma has greatly increased, one becomes separated from the appearance of self-characteristics such as external objects, and abides in mind-only. How does one abide in mind-only? From then on, in reality,

All appearances, such as forms, are like the appearances at the time of recognizing dreams in a dream. All of these are merely appearances of one's own mind, and there is no appearance of external objects with their own characteristics. At that time, the distraction of grasping at external objects such as forms will be abandoned and will not appear. After that, the yogi is left with only the thought or distraction of clinging to the idea that there is a mind, which has not been abandoned. This is the time of samadhi when tolerance has entered into one aspect of it. At that time, if there is no object to be grasped, how can there be a mind that grasps it? Thinking in this way, quickly realizing that the two are the same, and attaining the path of seeing and the uninterrupted path, one quickly touches the samadhi that immediately follows, and this is the time of the supreme mundane dharma samadhi that immediately follows. What is meant by immediately following? It is like this: after the tolerance of realizing that there is no object to be grasped, immediately following that, one also abandons the distraction of clinging to the subject, and immediately after that, one enters the first ground. Therefore, the supreme mundane dharma is called immediately following. These things that have just been explained, in order, should be understood as the four paths of joining, such as the heat stage. Next, it is explained how the path of seeing is attained immediately after attaining the supreme mundane dharma. After that, the bodhisattva who has attained the supreme mundane dharma, with wisdom that transcends the world, surpasses the hearers and solitary realizers, and sees the unsurpassed, non-conceptual wisdom in the three spheres, is free from the afflictions to be abandoned, and is therefore stainless. Because he has abandoned the grasped and the grasper, he has attained freedom from the two graspers. The sutra says, "In the Dharma, one attains the eye of the Dharma, free from dust and stain," which means that by abandoning the grasped and the grasper, one is free from dust, and by being free from what is to be seen and abandoned, one is free from stain. Alternatively, tolerance is freedom from dust, it is the antidote to the obscurations of afflictions and knowledge, the uninterrupted path, and wisdom is the path of liberation, therefore it is called stainless. The term "in the Dharma" refers to the eye of wisdom or the eye of knowledge that sees the suchness of all dharmas, that is, suchness as it is. Thus, the arising of non-conceptual wisdom is the transformation of the basis of consciousness of this bodhisattva, that is, it is considered to be the first ground of the noble ones. So, how long does the first ground last?
