The way to do it is: For any object of focus, fix your mind on it single-pointedly and remain there. Even if you stay like that, it won't stay for a moment, but will move to other aspects. Without being distracted from the continuity of the previous object, guard it with mindfulness and maintain the continuity as much as possible. If, even when staying like that, you cannot stay for a long time and become distracted elsewhere, quickly realize, "I am distracted to another place." Then, bring your mind back to the previous object and stay there. By repeatedly familiarizing yourself in this way, if you can maintain the continuity even a little, then the wise person should strive very hard, and even more so, to gather the mind inward, that is, to gather it to the previous object of the mind, which is called 'close placement.' After that, when the mind is able to stay a little better than before, in order to see for yourself the qualities of the mind staying inward, think, "How wonderful it would be if I could attain the samadhi of the mind staying!" By rejoicing in samadhi and striving for it, tame your own mind. That is to say, the mind that cannot be tamed by distracting thoughts is tamed by rejoicing in samadhi. In this way, rejoicing in samadhi and striving for it, even if you try to fix the mind on the object as much as possible, due to the force of previous familiarity with distraction, it will still become distracted. This distraction is like a thief stealing samadhi, causing great harm. Because you see the faults of distraction, do not be dominated by it, but strive for samadhi, the root of all qualities. Thinking, "I must pacify the dislike for samadhi caused by distraction," this is called the sixth stage of mind-abiding: pacification. Even if the mind stays much better than before by striving in this way, sometimes greed and displeasure, and agitation and dullness, etc., arise as afflictions close to the main ones. If you are dominated by these afflictions as before, you will not achieve samadhi, which is a great fault. If you are not dominated by them, you will achieve samadhi, which is the basis for extraordinary qualities such as clairvoyance. Therefore, in any case, do not think of these bad thoughts. In this way, examine greed, etc., individually, or apply antidotes, or pacify them by not thinking about them, which is called close pacification.

Then, the practitioner with diligent effort, through effort of mind, obtains the eighth stage of mind-abiding, which is the mind-abiding with exertion, naturally arising due to the power of habituation. If one strives diligently relying on effort, one will not be interrupted by other distractions, and abiding in the object of focus is called being with exertion. In that state of mind-abiding with exertion, continuously cultivate habituation, without needing to exert effort, the mind naturally abides in the object of focus, and spontaneously accomplishes, thus obtaining non-exertion, which is the last of the nine stages of mind-abiding, called the one-pointed mind that is in accordance with samadhi. The nine methods of mind-abiding are: placing, rightly placing, gathering and placing, closely placing, taming, pacifying, closely pacifying, making a single stream, entering samadhi or equipoise, as stated in the sutras. After obtaining the mind that abides naturally without exertion, if one continues to habituate in that state, then the body of that practitioner becomes extremely pliable and workable due to thorough training, and the mind also obtains thorough training. The body, in a state of spaciousness and extreme bliss, becomes workable for cultivating virtue; the mind, with an experience of clarity, purity, freedom from turbidity, and pervading joy, becomes workable for focusing on virtuous objects, obtaining small and medium pliancy. Then, obtaining great pliancy that is extremely thin and clear like a shadow. One should know that this is the mental activity with aspects of tranquility and coarseness that is the means of attaining the first dhyana. Through that mental activity, by gradually abandoning the three types of afflictions of the desire realm, large, medium, and small, that samadhi is increased. Because that increase goes far beyond the lower ground, that practitioner obtains the actual dwelling place of the first dhyana. Similarly, one should know that through the higher and higher mental activities with aspects of tranquility and coarseness, one can cultivate up to the actual dwelling place of the fourth dhyana. Up to this point, the method of cultivating samadhi has been explained. From here on, the qualities of obtaining samadhi are shown. When one obtains the actual dwelling place of the four dhyanas, in order to pursue supernormal powers, obtaining the actual dwelling place of dhyana, one can abandon the afflictions of one's own realm, namely attachment, wrong views, and doubt.
