The ultimate practice is to proceed to attain unsurpassed enlightenment. The chapter on practice from the Great Vehicle Sutra Ornament, that is, the fourteenth chapter, is completely explained. Fifteenth Chapter: Chapter on Instructions and Subsequent Teachings After that, the cause of making practice extraordinary is instructions and subsequent teachings, so it is explained. There are four points: how to obtain instructions, how to properly attend to the instructions, how to progress on the path from them, and stating the great benefits of the instructions. First, on the ground of conduct through faith, by accumulating merit for countless eons, one will definitely arise in the first supramundane ground. Faith in the Great Vehicle path will increase more and more, just as the waters of the four directions flow into the great ocean, the virtues of one's own mind will be perfected by the virtuous dharmas gathered by the accumulation of merit and wisdom, and one will enter the flawless supreme dharma ground. As just explained, the prince who has accumulated merit, from many eons ago, his mind stream is completely pure and his discipline is completely pure. Having heard many profound and vast Great Vehicle teachings, knowing their meaning well as it is, and with a virtuous mind that does not associate with the five obscurations, one will diligently apply oneself to meditating on the path of application. Thus, because one has previously perfected the accumulations, one has the fortune to comprehend the wisdom of the first ground. At that time, one will obtain the samadhi of the continuity of the doors of dharma. What is the samadhi of the continuity of dharma? It is that by abiding in it, one can receive limitless instructions of the holy dharma from countless Buddhas, and one can continuously retain their words and meanings. In this way, those with sharp faculties can obtain that samadhi on the great path of accumulation, and some say that it is obtained at the time of the supreme dharma. Having obtained it in this way, the qualities of that samadhi will also increase more and more. Thus, abiding in the samadhi of the continuity of dharma, from the supreme spiritual friend, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, one will obtain the pacification that causes one to attain the first ground of transcendent wisdom.

In order to obtain extremely vast or broad land, and extremely vast insight wisdom, for that purpose, one will obtain vast instructions that are in accordance with the meaning of countless sutras. Second, regarding properly attending to the meaning of the instructions, there are two types: attending with thought and attending with meditation. First, it is explained by seven verses beginning with "Then, first." Having obtained the instructions, first or initially, the bodhisattva who diligently upholds vows, regarding the Dharma of the twelve branches of scripture, such as the sutras, non-duality refers to the absence of grasper and grasped, or the non-dual suchness that is separate from existence and non-existence, distinguishing and clearly explaining its meaning, merely placing the mind on the names of sutras such as the *Ten Bhumi Sutra*, the *Lankavatara Sutra*, and the *Moon Lamp Sutra*, merely thinking, "The name of this sutra is this," that is the fundamental mind. Then, the one who diligently upholds vows, in sequence, examines and analyzes the words of that sutra in detail, that is, from "Thus have I heard" etc., until the end is complete, analyzing all the words in detail, examining how many chapters this sutra has, how many verses, and how many letters. This is called subsequent examination or the accompanying mind. Within each one, properly, one should also analyze its meaning. That is to say, within each sutra, emphasizing the words in this way is not inappropriate, but according to the *Wise Commentary*, one should emphasize "within each one, properly with one's own wisdom." Actually, after examining the words of the sutra, one should know what the meaning of this word is, contemplate the meaning being expressed, and contemplate the letters expressing it, that is, counting, measuring, contemplating, and individually contemplating these meanings. The first, for example, is the number of the five aggregates, eighteen realms, twelve sources, etc., the form aggregate has ten sources and one part of the Dharma realm, non-cognitive form, totaling eleven, the feeling aggregate has six consciousnesses from the contact arising from the aggregation of the eye faculty to the mind faculty, etc., in short, it is examining the meanings by counting them.
