Bodhisattva-mahasattvas enter into samadhi by eliminating the characteristics of the nature of all things, but not so for Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Those Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas enter into cessation samadhi, but fall into the characteristics of apprehending and grasping, which are characterized by manifestation. This is explained by the Buddha himself with his own intention, and made as a distinction of samadhi. Therefore, Sravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Arhats generally enter into cessation samadhi, while Bodhisattvas are said to enter from the sixth bhumi onwards. In the auto-commentary, it says: If it were not so, because they do not fully understand that things are without inherent existence, just like worldly people who are free from desire, they would also be overwhelmed by Bodhisattvas who have generated the mind of enlightenment for the first time, through their own discriminating wisdom. The meaning of what is said is: Grasping onto the self of a person is the root of all afflictions that arise in samsara, and if the object of its focus, the "I," has inherent existence, then the grasping of the "I" cannot be abandoned. However, the "I" is merely imputed in dependence on the aggregates without investigation, and is not established by its own nature. How can one be liberated from samsara by knowing that the self is merely imputed in dependence on the aggregates, which are multiple and impermanent, as being of the nature of emptiness? This and the emptiness of the aggregates, etc., or rather, in teaching the absence of self of phenomena, there is only a difference in the basis of emptiness, but there is no difference in the way of emptiness. Furthermore, realizing that the nature of dependent arising is emptiness also requires relying on the prior knowledge that the nature of the coarse aggregates is merely imputed and without substance, in order to be established through reasoning. Therefore, in order to dispel the thought that the absence of self of phenomena or emptiness is unreasonable, emptiness means that the phenomena that arise in dependence do not have their own inherent nature, and that is all, there is nothing else. If the Sravakas completely do not accept this, then it is also impossible to realize the absence of self of a person. Because until the co-emergent view of self that grasps onto the self imputed in dependence on the aggregates as being established by its own nature is not refuted, even if one knows that there is no permanent, singular, and independent self, etc., one will not be liberated by that alone, and it will become like the detachment of non-Buddhists. This is established through reasoning. Below

Also in the root text: If you abandon the permanent self, then for that reason, your mind or aggregates are not self. Your yoga, seeing selflessness, cannot realize the self-nature of form, etc., because it enters by focusing on form, and attachment, etc., will arise because it does not realize the self-nature of that thing. As it is said. In the self-commentary: Like the outsiders, these also cannot abandon all the subtle desires that are practiced in the three realms. Because it is inverted by focusing on the self-nature of form, etc., it cannot realize the selflessness of the person, because it focuses on the aggregates, which are the cause of imputation as self. The meaning of what is said is that, like you, the Hearer Vehicle, who do not want the emptiness that arises from dependence, even if you can realize that there is only an imputed self, you will not abandon the grasping of the self as established by its own nature. Like a water bubble, if you cannot destroy even the gross grasping of the mere imputation of a large form to a collection of many dharmas, how can you realize the way in which form is empty of its own nature? Therefore, you will not realize the suchness of form, etc., and grasping form as beautiful, and focusing on it, thinking, "I will meet with this," attachment, etc., will arise, because you do not realize the self-nature of that object. Thus, without knowing the suchness of objects, etc., abiding in objects, and without abandoning self-grasping, it is also shown that there are subtle desires. However, even if you only accept that the aggregates are gross and not substantially established, as long as you grasp that the self-nature of the basis of imputation, which is without parts, is truly established, then you will not fully realize the selflessness of that dharma. Just as merely realizing that a pot is gross and not substantially established does not mean that you have realized the selflessness of the pot. Just as merely realizing the gross selflessness of a person, such as the impermanent self, does not mean that you have understood the realization of the selflessness of a person. Thus, by relying on the way of knowing that the gross aggregates are not one, but are merely imputed to a collection of many, one can fully possess the subtle selflessness that realizes that the self-nature of the person is not established, because the object of grasping of the innate self-grasping is merely imputed in dependence, and there is not even a little bit of establishment by its own nature, being able to understand this is the reason for the sevenfold chariot.
