Second, if one thinks that the agent, the self, does not exist, but its action exists, then that is not the case, because without an agent there is no action. Judge all dependencies by this. Second, regarding the statement in the sutras that the self is imputed. The sutras do not say that the skandhas, etc., are the self, so how is it said that they are imputed in dependence on them? As it is said, the co-emergent ego-grasping also does not regard these common, individual, or collective three as the self, and wanting to realize selflessness without refuting the object of the co-emergent ego-grasping, these three statements are shown to be unrelated. First, because the Thubpa (Buddha) said in the sutra of the meeting of father and son: Great King, the person, the individual, is the aggregation of the six elements, the six bases of contact, the eighteen mental activities. Therefore, the self is said to be the six elements, namely earth, water, fire, wind, consciousness, and space, and the six bases of contact that arise from the aggregation of the eye, etc., are manifested in dependence on them, and the mind and mental factors are taken as the basis for imputation, and it is clearly stated that the self is not other than these, such as earth, etc., nor is it those themselves, nor is it merely the aggregation of those, but is merely individual, because those cannot be the self. Second, for that reason, it is not reasonable for the mind of ego-grasping to focus on those three from beginningless time. Third, divided into meaning and example. First, when a yogi realizes selflessness, he only abandons the permanent self, and this permanent self is not considered to be the basis or object of the co-emergent ego-grasping. Therefore, merely knowing that there is no such permanent self, and saying that it is possible to completely eliminate the view of self that has existed since beginningless time, as well as the co-emergent ego-grasping, is very ridiculous, because there is no connection between them. Second, for example, if someone sees a snake living in a hole in the wall of his house, but says that there is no elephant here, thinking that this will dispel the doubt about the snake, and that dispelling the doubt will eliminate the fear or harm of the snake, or prevent it from happening, this is extremely ridiculous and is an object of ridicule for the wise, because the objects of these two are different.

Furthermore, just as knowing the permanent self to be empty does not reverse the innate ego-grasping, even if one negates true establishment, if one leaves the appearance vividly in its own place and negates true establishment other than that, the object of clinging of the innate grasping at a truly established pot will not be refuted, because this object of 'it is a pot' is the basis of attachment, aversion, benefit, and harm. Therefore, the emptiness that is empty of other meanings is inferior and does not help. One should not seek emptiness separately from dependent arising that appears as it is. This is the system of Nagarjuna. Therefore, it is said that a pot is empty by a pot. Being empty does not mean not appearing. It is appearing while being empty, and when analyzed, it collapses into being inexpressible and without an object of focus. This is the actual system of the Consequentialists. If a pot is not empty by a pot, how can the designation of the pot's bulging belly, etc., be established in conventional terms? Even if it is established, if it is not the same as being established by its own character, how is it different? If you say it can withstand analysis, then what is the difference between being established by its own character and being truly established? Tell me! The Svātantrikas are realists. If you are a Madhyamika, then tell me, what kind of method of negating the self of phenomena is superior to that which is not established when analyzed by the ultimate truth of being separate or non-separate? In this way, it will become clear how you are superior to the Svātantrikas. Second, refuting the remaining ways of conceiving of a self in relation to the aggregates, there are two parts: refuting the three remaining ways that have not been explained before, and a common conclusion. The first part has two parts: refuting the establishment as a support and supported, and refuting the belief that the self possesses aggregates. First, it is not the case that the self exists in the aggregates as a support by its own nature, nor is it the case that the aggregates exist as a support by their own nature for the self. For what reason? If the self and the aggregates definitely existed as other, then just like a house and its foundation, there should be a conception of support and supported that is established by its own nature. However, since that which is other does not exist, the belief in support and supported is an artificial conception. Second, I do not believe that the self possesses form. For what reason? Because the self does not exist, there is no meaning of possessing, just like the son of a barren woman. If the self and the aggregates were other, it would be like Devadatta possessing a cow. If they were not other but the same, it would be like Devadatta possessing form. However, the self is not the same as form.
