Second, concerning manifestation. First, regarding the view that the aggregates are the self according to the meaning of the scriptures, there are two aspects: the presentation of the proponent's position and the refutation of it. First, the scriptures state that because the teacher says that the aggregates are the view of self, monks, whether they are ascetics or Brahmins, whoever thinks that there is a self, they only observe these five aggregates of clinging. Therefore, some say that the aggregates are the self. Second, the intention of the scriptures is to show from the perspective of cutting off what is to be refuted. Even if it is allowed to be said from the perspective of establishment, it cannot help the proponent's view, there are two ways. First, there are two types: statement and explanation. First, that scripture is to prevent the existence of a self that is imputed as other than the aggregates, it is not saying that the aggregates are the self, if it were, other sutras say that form is not the self, etc. Second, because other sutras say that form and feeling are not the self, thought is also not the self, formations are also not the self, and consciousness is also not the self. Therefore, the scripture briefly says that the aggregates are not the self. Second, if the aggregates are the self, then it is not separated one by one from the collection, and in this way it contradicts the proponent's view, there are two ways. First, even so, when saying that the aggregates are the self, it is saying that the collection of aggregates is the self, not saying that each nature of the aggregates is the self, for example, when saying forest, it is not saying each tree, but saying the collection of trees. Each tree can do things like firewood, but the forest is just a name, there is no substance, so it cannot do things like firewood, it is similar. Second, how it contradicts, and the refutation of the defense against that fault, there are two types. First, if it is said like this, then the scriptures say that oneself is one's own protector, etc., because the mere collection has no substance, so it cannot do things like protector and taming, therefore the collection is not a protector, nor a tamer or a master, because the collection has no meaning or substance of enjoyment, etc., so the collection is also not the self. Second, the collection and the collected are of the same nature, so there is no answer to the defense of that fault. Because it is not related to the meaning of the scriptures, it is refuted.

There are two refutations based on contradiction with reason. First, there are two parts: refuting that only the collection is the self from the perspective of example and exemplified, and refuting the response to avoid that fault. First, if only the collection is the self, then refuting by the consequence that the collection of parts of the example of a chariot should become the chariot. Similarly, the example shows that the exemplified self is also imputed based on the aggregates, thus showing that only the collection is not the self. First, the collection is not different in essence from the collected, so it is thought that it can be a protector, etc. If the collection and the collected are one, then at that time its parts, the scattered collection, should become the chariot itself, because the chariot and the self are the same, and the sutras also say they are similar. That is, the sutras say: The so-called self is the mind of the demon. You have become the seer. This aggregate of formations is empty, and there is no sentient being in it. Just as the collection of parts, based on which it is called a chariot, similarly, based on the aggregates, it is called a conventional sentient being. So it is said. Second, the sutras say that the self is imputed based on the collection of aggregates. Therefore, the mere collection of aggregates is not the self, because it is imputed based on it, just like the elements and what is made from the elements. Because it arises from dependence, the dependent itself is not merely the collection, because if it were, the elements and form, etc., should also become that. Second, the response to avoid the fault. It is not merely the collection, but when the collection occurs, a special shape is formed, similarly, it is not right to say that there is no collected when the collection of parts is complete, because all the collections exist, it is not enough to merely have the collected, but it is thought that the collected is a special shape. This is refuted. Because that shape exists in tangible things like chariots. For you, those forms, etc., that have shapes themselves become the self. The collection of the four mental aggregates, such as mind, is not the self itself, because those minds, etc., do not have shapes. Second, in terms of contradiction with reason, there are two parts: stating the contradiction, and refuting the response to avoid that fault. First, the taker, the self, and the taken, the aggregates, are not one rational entity, because if that were the case, the agent and the action would become one.
