Through perfect self-discipline, the wise will attain heaven. Thus it is said, one mind is the self. The sutra says: Taming the mind is good, taming the mind leads to happiness. Thus it is. Gorampa says: Those who consider the object of the view of the perishable aggregate and the self to be the same, therefore all who consider the self to be substantially existent are the same, even the materialists who consider it to be nominally existent, these two are not the same in meaning. It is said that the object of the view of the perishable aggregate is the aggregates, but they do not consider the aggregates to be the self. Because there is no establishment of the self other than the aggregates. Some say that the object of the view of the self is only the aggregates. Some consider all five aggregates to be the basis of the view of the self, while others consider only the mind to be the self. Secondly, there are two ways to refute the view that the self and the aggregates are one: generally refuting it, and refuting other ways of conceiving the self in relation to the aggregates. First, there are two points: stating the reasons why the aggregates should not be the object of the view of the self, and explaining the meaning of saying that the object is the aggregates. First, there are two points: generally refuting the oneness of the self and the aggregates, and specifically refuting it from the perspective of contradicting the previous party's assertions. First, if the aggregates are the self, then therefore those aggregates, distinguished by the five aggregates, internal divisions, the six collections of consciousness, and moments, will become many, and therefore those selves will also become many. Although this cannot be extended to merely being many and having the same essence, the self and the aggregates are absolutely one without otherness, and even if this was not initially acknowledged by others, there is no fault in being the same in essence and merely being other, but if one acknowledges that the self and the aggregates are both real, it is forcibly pushed into an undifferentiated unity, and if one accepts this, it will be inferred that the self becomes many. Secondly, there are three ways in which the previous party contradicts their own assertions: contradicting the scriptures, and contradicting reason. First, there are two parts: the actual refutation, and the conclusion of the refutation. First, there are four points: refuting by inferring that the grasping of the self is not inverted; refuting by inferring that the self is annihilated; refuting by inferring that attaining nirvana becomes meaningless; and refuting by inferring that the establishment of the law of cause and effect is unreasonable. The first is that the self becomes a substance, that is, because the aggregates are substances, and because taking the self as an object is based on substances, therefore, like the consciousness that grasps blue and yellow, it will not become inverted.
