In order not to obstruct self-characterization, it is unreasonable to add the distinction of "truly established," revealing this key point, abandoning this as the special way in which the Consequentialists establish emptiness. What is the reason that other treatises acknowledge being Consequentialist, but do not abandon the views of the Autonomists? Therefore, if one cannot distinguish well, then for these two, sometimes it seems that there is no difference, and sometimes it seems that there is a big difference. Just as it is impossible to refute each other, thoughts are entangled like Nepalese felt, and it is difficult to generate a decisive certainty. Understanding its key lies in the way of observing whether all dharmas are empty or not empty of their own nature. If emptiness is established in this way, it is easy to understand, and certainty will also be upright. If certainty arises in this way, then in all the treatises that explain emptiness, no matter how one thinks about any way of applying terms, such as "two selves" are what is to be refuted, but terms are not obstructed, etc., there will be no contradiction, because they are consistent in key points. Therefore, what is the use of grasping the tenets of each other's ways of expressing words and engaging in many debates? When arguing on the level of emptiness, and when establishing terms, one must think. Just knowing that it is acknowledged in that way, even if the ways of acknowledging in each occasion are like that, it would be good if one could prove that these two are consistent in meaning. Second, explaining the intention stated in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra includes revealing that such teachings are provisional, and establishing the reasons for such certainty. First, regarding this, in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra it says: "External appearances are existent or nonexistent, the mind appears in various forms, body and enjoyment, dwelling places, etc., I have said are only mind." Etc., no matter which sutra says that external appearances are not real, but the mind appears as various external objects. The intention of what is said is that, for those who are very attached to form, in order to dispel the afflictions caused by form, temporarily first dispel, that is, prevent, and this is also provisional. Because such teachings are provisional depending on the disciples. For the disciples, if the profound Prajñāpāramitā is taught, they cannot accept it, so temporarily preventing external objects, it seems that the mind exists, thereby being able to abandon attachment to form. Second, the provisional meaning is established by reason.

And, explaining the intention of such pronouncements. In this way, there are three instructions on understanding the provisional and definitive meanings of other sutras. First, how do we know that it is provisional? Because such scriptures are declared by the Teacher to be provisional. This is also reasonable as provisional. To prove that it is provisional, there are also scriptures that can be established, such as in the Lankavatara Sutra: "Just as a doctor gives various medicines to patients, so too, the Buddha speaks of mind-only to sentient beings." Just as giving medicine to different patients is not up to the doctor, but must be based on the patient's condition. Speaking of mind-only is not the Teacher arbitrarily establishing his own wisdom, but rather according to the inclinations of the beings to be tamed. Through this, we can understand. In sutras with such characteristics, such as the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, it is said that there is other-dependence among the three natures. Other sutras are also clarified by this scripture, they are all provisional. Second, first, it is shown that external objects do not exist, and then after that, the establishment of the self-nature of consciousness is refuted. The Buddhas say that this is easy to obtain, because objects and subjects are established in dependence on each other. Therefore, if you see that there is no object of knowledge, then consciousness is also established by being refuted by reasoning, so if you realize that there is no object of knowledge, then consciousness can sometimes realize it by itself, and sometimes it can be realized by others pointing it out slightly. Therefore, this is a special method for entering into selflessness, so first, the object of knowledge must be refuted. Third, in this way, there are two types of scriptures spoken by the Buddha, definitive and provisional. You must understand their historical classifications, so as to recognize which scriptures are not of ultimate meaning, but are the meanings or contents expressed for the purpose of taming beings. These are all provisional, thereby taming these beings, and you must know that the scriptures with emptiness as the content expressed are definitive. Third, refuting arising from both, including: showing refutation through the above reasoning, and showing that it is also unreasonable from the above two. The first is, for the naked ascetics, when a pot arises from a lump of clay, a stick, a wheel, water, and a potter, the clay pot is the nature of clay.
