It is able to produce results. Second, regarding refutation, it is divided into refuting the endless production of ripened results, and refuting the contradiction with the scriptures that state the existence of the Alaya consciousness. First, it is divided into showing an example that illustrates two meanings, and the actual way in which the example of karma produces results. First, if it is believed that things that are not born by nature do not have the exhaustion of nature, and therefore ripened results occur, then why can't the karma that has already ripened produce endless ripened results again? If it is said that it is reasonable because obstruction does not cause harm, or that both ripened and unripened are non-existent and the same, then although they are the same in terms of non-existence of nature, there is a difference in whether they can function or not. For example, just as all false objects such as rabbit horns and hairnets are the same in that they do not exist by nature, the object like a hairnet, for those with blurred vision, the object seen is the image of a hairnet, not the image of other things such as rabbit horns and the son of a barren woman. Second, it is divided into the way of not producing endless ripened results, and the way of not producing confused results. First, just as that example, if the nature of karma has not stopped is the same, then know that results are produced from unripened karma, not from ripened karma again. For example, the false object hairnet causes the consciousness of the object-possessor to produce the image of a hairnet, not other images, and the non-existent dharma can produce its own result, and it is not produced randomly, but can produce without confusion. Non-existent karma and so on can also do this extensively. As long as the hairnet exists, the object-possessor also produces its image. Second, not only that, just as that example, although good and non-good etc. do not have self-nature, therefore the ripened result is non-good and unpleasant, it is the power of the black karma of suffering; the ripened result is pleasant and happy, it is the nature of good, it is produced from good, this can be seen. The confusion of cause and effect will not change, this is certain. Just as a person with clear eyes does not see any eye defects such as hairnets, a person with wisdom who sees that both good and non-good are without self-nature will attain liberation. For karmic results, those who carefully search and analyze the reason why this cause produces this result through reasonable arguments will...

If direct causality is not found, the mistake of thinking that cause and effect are unreasonable may arise, because causality cannot be established by a one-sided view. Therefore, it is said to be 'inconceivable,' which also negates the mind that speculates about cause and effect, that is, it is said that cause and effect are inconceivable because the reasoning is profound and difficult to understand. Second, regarding this, there are two situations: explaining such scriptures as provisional meaning and explaining examples of these scriptures. First, if someone thinks that this contradicts the scriptures that say that the ālaya-vijñāna and so on exist, then the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra and other scriptures say that the ālaya-vijñāna is the basis of the differences in the power of limitless dharmas, the ālaya-vijñāna exists, and the Dharma Skandha Sūtra says that the person (pudgala) itself exists. Some only explain the skandhas, saying that these skandhas themselves exist. This explains the nature of true emptiness. In order to make it understandable to those who do not understand such profound meanings, it is explained in this way with provisional meaning. Second, for example, having abandoned the seeds of the view of the aggregates of existence, although one has separated from the view that clings to 'I' and 'mine,' the Buddha, in order to make worldly conventions easy to understand, says 'I tell you' or shows 'my hand' and so on, according to need. Similarly, although things have no own-nature, in order to guide sentient beings, it is said 'exists' with provisional meaning. Second, specifically refuting the view of the Mind-Only school, it is divided into presenting the opponent's view and refuting the opponent's view. First, because the inner habit matures, apart from the mind itself, there is no object of apprehension as a substance, nor is there an object that can apprehend or discriminate it. In reality, having thoroughly known that these three realms are only consciousness, a bodhisattva on the sixth bhūmi who abides in the wisdom of the emptiness of the apprehended and the apprehender, here realizes the suchness of seeing only the consciousness of the emptiness of the two, and there is no other suchness other than that. If there is no external object, then how can a mind with the image of an external object arise? For example, just as the ocean that I stir up is large and waves arise, all internal and external things arise from the ālaya-vijñāna, which is the seed of everything. Desire and so on, and faith and so on, constantly arise and cease, relying on their own power, that is, relying on the power established in the ālaya-vijñāna maturing, thereby producing impure other-dependent consciousness, but ordinary people cling to this as the apprehended and the apprehender being separated.
