Wandering in the wilderness. The nirvana of the three vehicles is: by realizing the selflessness of persons, abandoning the afflictive obscurations, thereby liberating from the suffering of samsara, manifesting the fruit of the Hearer; and realizing that the self of persons and the apprehended aspect of form are without reality, obtaining the fruit of the Solitary Realizer; through the wisdom of realizing the two selflessnesses, abandoning the two obscurations, the Bodhisattva vehicle obtains the non-abiding nirvana. Generally speaking, for whatever dharma is clung to, if one realizes that the nature of its object of apprehension does not exist, then the clinging to it and other clingings will never cease. As Aryadeva said: 'When one sees that objects are unreal, then the seeds of the three existences are cut off.' Thus it is said. Among these, as mentioned above, the way to see selflessness is that the objects to be examined by the wisdom of ultimate truth, and to be established as emptiness, are these dharmas that exist in name. For those that do not exist in name, such as rabbit horns, there is no need to refute them with reason, because for any worldly person, it will not arise as a condition for the arising of self-grasping, etc. Therefore, for something like a vase, when examining whether its own characteristic is established or not, or with the reasoning of one or many, the vase itself in name is impossible to examine. Therefore, it is necessary to examine whether the vase itself is empty of its own nature. Because, the emptiness to be proven by that reasoning is the vase itself, and it must be proven without depending on the vase itself. Until that is established, the unreality of the vase cannot be established. Therefore, ordinary beings first focus on the vase as the basis for imputing true existence, and then cling to it as true, rather than focusing on the true existence on the vase and then clinging to it as true. And, true existence cannot be directly apprehended by eye consciousness, etc., because it is an imputation or conceptual construction arising from delusion. Therefore, what is to be refuted by the wisdom of ultimate truth are these dharmas that exist in name. Although these dharmas of name, such as vases, appear in this way due to the power of dependent origination, this is an undeniable and irrefutable existence, but if one thinks whether this appearance is established as its own nature as it appears, or not established, then, when examining with the four logical arguments of the Madhyamaka of ultimate truth, can these appearances such as vases become objects of examination as minute particles?

Not looking at many things means that phenomena such as vases are not empty of other causes, but rather it is necessary to determine that they abide in emptiness, which by their own nature or essence have no origin or are not observable. Thus, that which is empty from its own side is called the absence of inherent existence of all phenomena, because if examined by reasoning that investigates ultimate truth, its essence is not observable, hence it is so named. It is called absence of self-nature, because it is not observable as this or that self-nature. Furthermore, although it is indicated by names such as signlessness, wishlessness, likewise characteristiclessness, emptiness, selflessness, ultimate reality, and the sphere of reality, another synonym for that name is the absence of true existence, because if phenomena such as vases are examined by reasoning that investigates ultimate truth, if they can be established as enduring examination, then they must be truly existent. However, in terms of any conditioned or unconditioned phenomenon that cannot be found to withstand examination by ultimate truth, it is called the absence of true existence. Therefore, if, as the proponents of doctrine nowadays hold, phenomena such as vases are not empty from their own side, but are empty of the true existence of others, which is other-emptiness, then since phenomena such as vases are not empty from their own side, therefore, not even one phenomenon that exists in conventional truth should be established as empty, nor should it be established as devoid of inherent existence. Therefore, all of these, without being prevented by reasoning, negate the true existence that does not exist in conventional truth, and it seems that the distinction of true existence is added to the extent of negation by ultimate truth investigation. In general, there is no contradiction in merely adding the distinction of true existence, and there are times when it is easy to understand. If we say that the nature of phenomena is self-empty, adding the name of absence of true existence, that is acceptable. However, if the nature of phenomena is self-empty, but it is not understood as the meaning of absence of true existence, but rather it is understood as merely negating extraneous true existence, then such emptiness does not negate even one aspect of the apprehension of reality in those phenomena, thus losing the need to establish emptiness, and the reality of phenomena becomes merely a single non-affirming negation that negates extraneous true existence that is unrelated to the phenomena themselves. Therefore, one does not understand the meaning of the co-emergent equality of appearance and emptiness, and the complete freedom from elaboration
