is not attained. If one sees the meaning of emptiness, one attains liberation. Therefore, emptiness is taught for the sake of attaining liberation, not for the sake of arguing over the twisting of words. Thus, for this infallible appearance of the five aggregates, when the gross elements are broken down to the level of atoms, one can understand through reason that the five aggregates are without wholeness or grossness. Therefore, one sees the aggregates as being of a nature of multiplicity and impermanence. Even if it is not certain that indivisible atoms have no inherent nature, if one sees that the five aggregates are not grasped as a single entity, nor is each individual aggregate grasped as a single entity, then one does not grasp such a manifold and impermanent phenomenon, because one realizes through one's own intellect the faults of leading to multiple selves and leading to impermanence, and thus knows that the so-called "self" is merely imputed in dependence on the aggregates and has no inherent essence of its own. This can prevent self-grasping. Such a view must also be present in the Śrāvakas. At that time, the gross aggregates that are not empty, their grossness is empty by way of true existence. The many that are not empty, their multiplicity is empty by way of true existence. Impermanence is not empty from its own side, but is empty by way of true existence. Even without applying this "other-emptiness," one can realize selflessness. If one applies it, then that which is truly gross in the aggregates, whether it is the grossness of all five gathered together, or the grossness of the six consciousnesses gathered together, or even the gross consciousness that is not empty, is taken as the basis for the imputation of self. There is no way to show that the object of self-grasping, the existence of self, is harmed by reason. The grossness may be whole, single, and permanent, but because it is admitted that the whole is not empty, such a whole is single and permanent, not momentary. If it can still be broken down into many and momentary, then even the imputation of permanence and oneness is imputed to the many phenomena as permanence and oneness, and the essence of permanence and oneness will not become non-empty. If the emptiness of the essence of permanence and oneness is expressed as emptiness by way of true existence, then I also agree with that. But if, like you, you think that the essence of permanence and oneness is not empty, but is empty by way of true existence, that these two are not the same, then as long as you admit that it is not empty from its own side, it is useless even if it is empty by others, because it is many, so the essence of singleness is empty, because it is momentary, so the essence of permanence is not empty, singleness is true.

The assertion of being established, as well as the assertion of being eternally established and wholly established, do not exist as terms in the world. Therefore, they do not cause anyone to cling to the aggregates, nor do they generate self-grasping, so there is no need to refute them. This way of explaining that all phenomena are not self-empty but other-empty not only has no benefit for understanding ultimate emptiness, but is actually harmful, because in that case, it becomes established that one's own essence is not empty. Even if it is said to be empty of other phenomena, it is impossible to prevent clinging to it. Regarding that commitment, in the appearance of conventional truth, it not only does not generate more understanding than self-emptiness, but is actually harmful, because in the appearance of terms, the five aggregates appear undeniably. That appearance is a diverse appearance and a changing appearance, not the opposite of a single and constant appearance. Therefore, the appearance of terms itself is established by relying on examining the emptiness of its own essence. If one does not rely on terms, there is no way to independently realize the ultimate truth. The appearance of terms itself inherently appears in a way that its own essence is not established, so saying that it is self-empty is established by direct perception, and it is not sufficient to speak of emptiness only to that extent. Emptiness is empty of true establishment, not that conventional truth is not self-empty, which not only does not generate more understanding than the former, but also, regarding the true establishment that is more exaggerated than what was said above, no one in the world perceives or clings to it. It is meaningless to establish emptiness with such a constructed meaning based on one's own mind, because what the world clings to is the pot itself, and it is impossible to cling to a true establishment other than the pot. If the pot itself is not empty, then even if the basis of clinging to it other than the pot is empty, conventional truth cannot be established as illusory, just as one would not mistake a rope for a snake if there were no snake. Therefore, one should know that the two truths, conventional and ultimate, are non-contradictory because the nature of the phenomena of terms appears in that way. In short, regarding these phenomena, such as the aggregates, that exist in the terms of all sentient beings, due to clinging to true establishment that exists by its own nature or essence, or is established as ultimate as it appears, grasping and clinging to self and phenomena, inside and outside, and so on, various conceptualizations arise in a continuous stream, and thus one wanders in samsara.
