If, by clinging to self and phenomena, afflictive and cognitive obscurations arise due to the power of various apprehenders and apprehended objects, then, if by analyzing, one knows that the objects to be refuted, self and phenomena, do not exist, and thus one must refute the clinging to self and the clinging to phenomena, then merely clinging to the self and phenomena to be refuted does not constitute self-grasping. Rather, it is because clinging to self and phenomena as truly existent that obscurations arise; therefore, true establishment is what is to be refuted. Shantideva said this, but he did not say that self and phenomena are what are to be refuted. If one refutes self and phenomena, one might think that it would become nihilism. In that case, the term "truly established" refers to the non-emptiness of self and phenomena. Emptiness and absence of inherent existence have the same meaning, not different ones. If, as you say, self and phenomena are not empty, but are empty of true establishment, then sentient beings also, focusing on the five aggregates of their own continuum that exist nominally, cling to "This is me," isn't this innate self-grasping? The Commentary on Valid Cognition says, "Wishing to be happy or not to be miserable, whatever thought arises, 'I am,' is innate in sentient beings." Similarly, the thought "This is a pot" is clinging to phenomena. Merely clinging to the object and thinking, "This is self" or "This is phenomena," merely this conceptual thought can generate afflictions, accumulate karma, and experience suffering. If this is not prevented, then that other true establishment, different from this, will not generate afflictions or accumulate karma. Like a rabbit's horn, which does not exist nominally, what need is there to refute it? Similarly, in the chapter on the twenty emptinesses, the six internal sense sources, such as the eye, are called internal, and the six external sense sources are called external. Similarly, merely recognizing other things as "that is that" gives rise to clinging to the essence of that thing. Thus, clinging to all phenomena as "that is that" arises. If one does not establish that its object is emptiness, but instead establishes non-emptiness, then even if one understands the twenty emptinesses of emptiness, such as external true establishment and internal true establishment, because clinging to the internal as internal phenomena, etc., that clinging to that thing cannot be eliminated. Therefore, the meaning of proclaiming the refutation of clinging to internal and external, both internal and external, great, and emptiness, etc., as "that is that" becomes unnecessary, because such emptiness cannot refute even one kind of clinging.

Therefore. As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there will be self-grasping. As it is said, if the five aggregates of worldly convention are not empty of themselves, then the clinging to the aggregates will not cease, which is obvious. And from merely grasping the aggregates of one's own continuum, self-grasping arises, which is also obvious. How can self-grasping be reversed? If one thinks that there is no fault because the five aggregates are empty of other true existence, then if the five aggregates are not empty of their own essence, clinging to that will cause self-grasping. Even if it is empty of other phenomena, it cannot harm the clinging to the aggregates in the slightest. Just as a vase is empty of cloth, it does not help the vase to be empty of its own essence in the slightest. Therefore, if one considers that the five aggregates are empty of their own essence and that non-existence is no different, then it is not contradictory to say that there is no true existence. But if there is a difference, that is, the five aggregates are not empty of themselves, and one clings to being empty of other true existence, then no matter how much one thinks about such emptiness, the clinging to the aggregates will not cease. Therefore, the vase, the dharma, is empty of true existence, because it is separated from the one true existence and the many true existences. This habit of following the words of proof in a reverse way has led to the need to explain the emptiness of the vase as being empty of other things as the meaning of emptiness. Do not cling to the vase, the dharma, as being empty, because it is not observed by the wisdom of ultimate truth. But cling to the vase, the dharma, as being empty of true existence, because there is such a difference, which makes the vase and the emptiness of the vase different in meaning, so the clinging to the vase cannot be prevented. Therefore, if one combines the nature of the vase being empty, etc., and understands that the nature of the vase is different from the vase in meaning, then it will lead to the nature of fire being heat and fire being different in meaning, etc. Therefore, by following the words and not relying on the meaning, searching for emptiness, at times, although the words are expressed in this way, because it often hinders the understanding of the meaning of emptiness, it seems more important to understand emptiness than to temporarily grasp the tenets of the words. If one thinks deeply in one's heart, such a tenet of words that cannot prevent the clinging to reality cannot liberate.
