Two explanations of conventional truth. First, due to the power of ignorance, the very nature of phenomena is obscured, so one does not see the nature and it appears as inverted, this is conventional truth. Because it covers or obscures that very nature. That which is obscured, any fabricated dharma that appears as true to its object, is called conventional truth, as said by the Thubpa (Buddha). In the presence of the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, Arhats, Bodhisattvas, and noble ones, the ignorance of grasping at truth has ceased in various ways, and it appears as illusion. For the post-attainment of the three noble ones, the fabricated phenomena that appear are conventional, that is, merely conventional, not true, because they do not have subtle pride, so there is no true appearance. Here, ignorance is the cause of the inverted appearance of the nature of things. This cause explains the meaning of the terms 'conventional' and 'true' for fabricated things. From the way one experiences without deception how things appear in the mind, it is called conventional, and nothing else is needed, and even if there is, it is useless. For example, fire is hot, water is wet, virtue brings happiness, non-virtue brings suffering, realizing selflessness brings liberation, grasping at self causes samsara, poison causes illness, medicine brings benefit, and so on. Even when experiencing the suffering of uninterrupted hell, there is nothing other than experiencing the feeling of fire touching the body. Similarly, until experiencing the bliss of Brahma and Indra, and the liberation of the noble ones, all appearances are merely imputed by thought and do not exist by their own nature, like illusions. Although it is imputed by thought, the existence of such appearances can be considered valid, but the mere appearance does not satisfy the mind, and if things must exist from their own side, then it would become truly established, but that is impossible. Therefore, the mind accumulates karma and appears to the mind. All that the mind clings to is merely conventional dharma, otherwise it would become ultimate truth. Merely the imputation of thought is the ultimate establishment of conventional truth. Nothing else can be found beyond that. Therefore, all dharmas are said to be merely imputed by thought. The way of imputation by thought is: this is a pillar, this is a pot, this is happiness, this is suffering, and so on. One grasps and focuses on the characteristics of various dharmas such as permanent and impermanent, conditioned and unconditioned. In its presence, it is unequal and has the duality of grasper and grasped.
