It is said in the tenth bhumi that when the fifth bhumi enters the sixth, it enters with ten kinds of equality of dharmas. What are the ten? The equality of all dharmas being without characteristics, without essence, without arising, without non-arising, peaceful, primordially pure, without elaboration, without acceptance or rejection, like illusion, dream, eye disease, water ripples, moon in water, reflection, emanation, and the equality of neither being existent nor non-existent. Among these, the first refers to the fact that appearances of dissimilar characteristics are meaningless in the samadhi of the noble ones. The second is that all dharmas are without self-essence, these two are general explanations. The third, non-arising, refers to the future, and the fourth, non-arisen, refers to being under the control of other times. The fifth, peacefulness, refers to being empty of arising and having arisen. The sixth is that such a thing is not immediately created by scripture and reasoning, but is primordially pure and abides as such. The seventh, without elaboration, means that in the face of dualistic appearances, it is impossible to elaborate with words and concepts. The eighth, without acceptance or rejection, refers to reality. The ninth is to ascertain these meanings through seven examples. The tenth is that no dharma is inherently existent or non-existent, and is not established by its own nature. Among these, only the equality of non-arising is established by reasoning, therefore, because of realizing other dharmas, it is explained here. Third, regarding the dharma that has been explained, there are two aspects: establishing emptiness through reasoning, and explaining the divisions of the established emptiness. The first has two aspects: establishing the selflessness of phenomena through reasoning, and establishing the selflessness of persons through reasoning. First, refuting self-existence through reasoning, and therefore, how it is established by reasoning that arising is merely dependent origination. Identifying the results of analysis through reasoning, there are three aspects. The first is refuting the four extremes of arising as being true in both ultimate and conventional truth. After such refutation, there are two aspects: dispelling disputes. The first is to briefly explain through the proposition of no four extremes of arising. Then to explain in detail through reasoning. Finally, to conclude with the meaning of such establishment, there are three aspects. First, the result does not arise from its own identical essence, and how could it arise from other causes established by self-essence? Therefore, it is unarisen. Nor does it arise from both self and other.

How could there be arising without a cause? If there is arising, it is invariably caused by one of these. On the point of contention that appears similar to two opponents, refuting or establishing certain dharmas is as stated in the Ornament [for Clear Realization]: "By the distinctions generated by the treatise, abandoning the subject," and so forth. Just as when sound, which appears similar, is taken as the subject, and sound is established as impermanent, on the sound that appears similar, just as the other permanent dharma that is to be refuted is eliminated, it is not that the appearing sound is negated. Rather, it is understood as a way of distinguishing the subject, the predicate, and the sign. From this arises the assertion, "The pot is not empty of the pot, but empty of truth." The way of establishing it as described above is without fault according to that system, and it is not necessary to refute it. Because on that subject, if a new object of negation is subtracted, or if what is unestablished is established, although it seems that the predicate increases, in essence there is no increase or decrease. As stated in the Pramāṇavārttika: "Although the object exists, due to ignorance, here, others are not mentioned subsequently. From the established and the similar dharma, it is merely a reminder that makes known the sign. Just as from seeing and not seeing, thus, cause and effect are being established. On those two, effects and so forth, are posited as separate meanings." Therefore, it is necessary to act as if the object of negation, true establishment, is negated on the pot that appears similar. This is the common practice of the Madhyamikas. If this is not done, there is no way to establish emptiness of truth. For example, if sound is taken as the subject, if one wants to define sound as a permanent particular, it is not established for the Buddhist; if one defines it as an impermanent particular, it is not established for the non-Buddhist. Therefore, one only posits the sound that is heard by the ear, and does not distinguish it according to the wishes of the opponent. At that time, the non-Buddhist holds that sound itself is permanent, and the Buddhist holds that sound itself is impermanent. The sound that appears similar to both, although at that time it seems as if it has not been distinguished by either party, if one considers the essence of the thing, a permanent sound and a sound that is neither permanent nor impermanent do not exist in the knowable. Therefore, those two are not the sound that appears similarly in the field of the senses, but the sound that is heard by the ear is precisely the sound that is defined as an impermanent particular. The basis for considering a pot to be truly established and truly unestablished is similar to this. Although the fact is like that, sound is permanen
