It is free from both elaborations of being designated as existent. Not only is it not the cause, but even the elaboration of being designated based on dependence is exhausted, that is nirvana. It cannot be designated as either thing or non-thing. That is, it is free from both the thing that is the cause and the non-thing that is designated based on dependence. Second, the common refutation has two parts: it is unreasonable by reasoning, and it is unreasonable by scripture. The first is: any phenomenon of samsaric coming and going, the karma that enters samsara relying on the previous one, that is the samsara of aggregates; and the person who enters samsara relying on the aggregates of appropriation as the cause, as previously explained. Thus, whether established or designated based on dependence or as the cause, such as arising and ceasing, things and non-things, etc., those that do not arise by nature of dependence, or even the nature of merely being designated based on dependence, that suchness, the nature of peace, which is beyond all extremes, that is nirvana, thus it is shown. Like me and the aggregates coming here from a previous life, and the phenomena of going from here to the other world, relying on things like long and short, that is, designating based on dependence, or like light from a flame, the samsara that is merely caused by the collection of one's own causes and conditions, that suchness of the way of abiding, is not merely designated based on dependence, nor does it arise as the cause, whatever is free from all elaborations, that is shown to be nirvana. That is, for the pacification of elaborations of all four extremes, there is no meaning of establishing "this" based on dependence or as the cause. Because nirvana is a conditioned phenomenon with a cause, or has the nature of a thing, or the destructive part of the destruction of a thing, these two designations based on dependence are not applicable, therefore there is nothing to designate as these two. So it is. Second: The sutra says: Monks, those who seek liberation from existence through arising or ceasing, they are of great ignorance. Thus, the teaching was given to show that one should abandon the view of observing the phenomena of arising things and the perverted view of destruction. Therefore, it is reasonable that nirvana is not the nature of arising things, nor is it the part of the destruction of non-things. Second, refuting the assertion that both are: If liberation, from the aspect of its essence, is a thing because it exists in its own nature; and from the opposite aspect of afflictions and other things, it is a non-thing because it is a non-thing, if it is asserted that it is both.
