He (the Buddha) fully understands suffering. Whoever sees all dharmas as unborn, abandons the origin, and so on, like the emptiness of dependent arising that is separate from both suffering and non-suffering, that is the true suchness of reality, and without seeing that, one does not see the true truth, as it is said. The second is, called the examination of the noble truths, which is the twenty-fourth chapter. The twenty-fifth chapter, in the chapter examining Nirvana, the connection of the sutra is, in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, it says: Nirvana is also like a dream. And so on, and the connection of the chapter. Regarding this, if everything is empty, then how is it possible to have a Nirvana without remainder? Having killed all the thieves of afflictions such as the view of the destructible aggregate, only the city of aggregates remains, which is the remainder with aggregates, and the city is also destroyed, which is without remainder. Therefore, if the abandoned and extinguished aggregates and karmic afflictions do not exist, then where is Nirvana? Because Nirvana exists, so do they, and in response to such a refutation, in order to give an answer, it is divided into two parts: the text and the name. The first part is divided into two parts: stating the views of others, revealing the reasoning of harm. The first part is: if all these internal and external dharmas are empty, then there is no arising of birth in this, and there is no extinction or destruction, if that is the case, then relying on the antidote, what cause—karmic afflictions—is abandoned, and what fruit—the aggregate of suffering—is extinguished, thereby attaining Nirvana? Therefore, you cannot establish Nirvana. The second part is divided into two parts: revealing that the fault exists in others, revealing the way in which the Madhyamikas have no fault. The first part is: if all dharmas are not empty, then for the dharma that exists by its own nature, there is no new arising of birth, and there is no destruction, then relying on the abandonment of what cause, and the extinction of what fruit, can one attain Nirvana? This is unreasonable. The second part is divided into three parts: revealing Nirvana as being free from extremes, refuting the elaboration of the four extremes, and eliminating the fault of the teaching becoming meaningless. The first part is: if one does not consider Nirvana to have the nature of abandoning the cause—karmic afflictions—and severing the fruit—the aggregates, then what is the nature of Nirvana? That is, there is no abandonment of previously existing defiled dharmas, nor is there a new attainment of previously non-existent pure dharmas, and there is no cessation of the continuum of aggregates, nor is there a permanent abiding constancy.

Such a nature that is without defilement, without the obstruction of the destruction of what previously existed, and without the arising or birth of what did not previously exist, is what is called nirvana. The second part has three aspects: refuting the four extreme views of nirvana; refuting the nirvana of the realized ones; and explaining the meaning of its establishment. The first part has three aspects: refuting the view that nirvana is existent and non-existent; refuting the view that it is both; and refuting the view that it is neither. The first part has two aspects: separate refutation and common refutation. The first part has two aspects: refuting the view that nirvana is existent; and refuting the view that it is non-existent. The first case is: the Vaibhashikas say that nirvana is existent because it is like a dam that prevents the future stream of karma and afflictions from arising, since non-existents cannot perform a function. In response, for the moment, according to your own view, nirvana is not existent, because if it were existent, it would follow that it has the characteristics of aging and death, since there is no existent that is without the aging of other changes and the death of the characteristic of the destruction of continuity. If nirvana were existent, then nirvana would become conditioned, since there is no existent that is not conditioned in any direction or time. Furthermore, if nirvana were existent, then how could it be that there is nothing that arises in dependence on nirvana? Since there is nothing that does not arise in dependence on existents, like an independent object is like a flower in the sky. The second case is refuting the view that nirvana is non-existent: if nirvana is merely the cessation of the arising of karma and afflictions, then nirvana is inherently non-existent, or like the extinguishing of a candle, it is the cessation of continuity. If nirvana is not existent, then how can it be naturally established as non-existent? The reason is that in any aspect where nirvana is considered to be inherently non-existent, in that aspect, without relying on the negation of existents, non-existents cannot be established by their own nature, since non-existents must be considered as another change of existents. Furthermore, if nirvana is not existent and is established by its own nature, then how can nirvana not depend on existents? It is impossible. The reason is that
