I, the connection of debate. To this, the opponent, if you Madhyamikas assert that all knowable things are without inherent existence, then the knowable four truths, the Three Jewels, the results of actions, and worldly conventions will all be untenable. In order to dispel this debate, an answer is given in two parts: the text and the title. The first part is divided into two: others raise objections, and answers to the objections are given. The first part is divided into four: the knowable four truths are untenable, the Three Jewels are untenable, the results of actions are untenable, and worldly conventions are untenable. The first point is: if it is argued that all phenomena, internal and external, are emptiness, then like the son of a barren woman, no thing will arise in the beginning and no thing will perish in the end, and because of this, you will not have the four noble truths. Thus, suffering arises from the origin, and the path prevents suffering, etc. Because there are no four noble truths, it will never be reasonable to fully understand suffering, abandon the origin, cultivate the path, and realize cessation. The second point is divided into three parts, in order: the Sangha is untenable, because the arising of the four truths of acceptance and rejection in the continuum does not exist, so the four fruits of the Hearers, etc., do not exist, and if there is no fruit, then those who abide in the fruit do not exist. Those who have entered the fruit do not exist. If the eight types of persons who have entered the fruit do not exist, then the Sangha of Hearers does not exist. The sacred Dharma is untenable, because there are no four noble truths, so the sacred Dharma that teaches and realizes them does not exist. The Buddha is untenable, if the Dharma to be taken and the Sangha that takes it do not exist, then how can their fruit, the Buddha, exist? If you say that the Buddha and everything else are emptiness, then saying emptiness in this way is harming the Three Jewels. Third, the results of actions are untenable, in this case, the results of good and evil exist, and its cause, the non-Dharma non-virtue and the Dharma virtue itself, are also untenable. Fourth, worldly conventions are untenable, and also the sights and sounds of worldly people, etc.

It is said that words such as "vase," "rice," and "yogurt" are harmful to everything. Second, the response to the debate is divided into three parts: stating the reason for initiating the debate, the rationale for not allowing faults, and the greatness of realizing Madhyamaka. The first part is: In this way, responding to the debater. Debater, you have not realized the necessity of emptiness, emptiness itself, and the meaning of emptiness. Because of this reason, you think that there is harm to the Four Noble Truths, etc. You, with your own conceptualization, think that it is merely non-existence, regard it as the meaning of emptiness, and grasp it in a reversed way. If all these are empty, etc., speaking such accusations does not harm the Madhyamikas. You hold the meaning of emptiness to be merely non-existence. Such emptiness is not the emptiness spoken of in our treatise. We enter into non-duality, which is empty of all elaborations such as existence and non-existence. The mere idea of non-existence is reversed and considered an object to be refuted by emptiness. Therefore, both the mere non-existence of things and the acceptance of true establishment equally lead to the conclusion that the Four Noble Truths, etc., do not exist. Therefore, we do not accept either of these two. In this regard, you think that emptiness is the nature of preventing all elaborations, and you do not understand its necessity. You only understand it as preventing the extreme of existence, which is not understanding the necessity. But it is not like that here, because those elaborations upon elaborations, such as "what is prevented by emptiness," etc., and as it is said, "All Buddhas teach emptiness in order to abandon all views," etc. You regard emptiness as merely preventing one side of existence, merely an elaboration of non-existence, which is wrong. Here, as it is said, "Not known from others, peaceful, not an object of action," etc., it is free from all elaborations of the four extremes. It is not merely relying on one side, relative to others it is empty, but claiming emptiness, etc., is not empty, so how can it be the nature of emptiness at all? You also do not understand the meaning expressed by the word emptiness. You understand the meaning of emptiness as merely the non-existence of cutting off the object to be refuted, and you are only focused on the opposite of non-emptiness being empty.
