Since it doesn't exist, is clinging to "impermanence" also inverted? Yes, it is inverted. Because the reality of things, in emptiness where no self-nature is established, neither permanence nor impermanence is established. Therefore, clinging to impermanence and clinging to permanence make no difference as to whether or not one enters into the reality of things. Saying "clinging to permanence is not inverted" does not establish the above point. Similarly, I think it would be clearer if this passage were also used to refute clinging to emptiness. Third, if, like this, clinging to permanence etc. is not inverted, but there is only temporary clinging, if there is clinging, then the clinger, the object of clinging, and the act of clinging are established, then, in what way does one cling to permanence and impermanence etc.? What is the act of clinging? Who is the clinger, is it me or the mind? What is the object of clinging, is it all phenomena such as form? Everything is naturally pacified, that is, naturally unborn, therefore, if, like impermanence, permanence etc., my existence etc., form, sound, smell, taste etc., or as explained in dependent origination etc., the agent, action, and object are without self-nature, therefore clinging does not exist. Second, refuting the person of the clinger is divided into two parts: general refutation, specific refutation. First part: If there is inversion, then there is a person corresponding to the inversion, just like there is Devadatta corresponding to the inversion. If it is not inversion or the correct view of inversion, then the so-called clinging does not exist, then which person corresponds to the inversion, and which person corresponds to the non-inversion? There is no such person. Second part: For a person who has already become inverted, it is impossible for inversion to exist, because for something that has already been established, there is no need to establish it again. For a person who has not become inverted, it is also impossible for inversion to exist, just like the Buddha. For a person who is becoming inverted, it is impossible for inversion to exist, because there is no becoming that is neither already changed nor not yet changed, that is, there is no situation where half is inverted and half is not inverted. Because these three situations are impossible, then in whom does inversion exist? Please discern for yourself with an impartial mind. If inversion is not naturally born from the beginning, then how can it exist? Just like the son of a barren woman.

If inversions do not arise, then where are those with inversions? Like a widow without a son. Furthermore, all things of inversion do not arise from self, nor do they arise from other, nor from both self and other, then where are inversion and those with inversion? They do not exist. Furthermore, if there exist such things as self, purity, permanence, and happiness, then the clinging to self with these as objects, and the knowledge of them as pure, permanent, and happy, are not inversions, because those objects exist, just like no-self. If self, purity, permanence, and happiness do not exist, then if there is no object to be negated, then the no-self, impurity, impermanence, and suffering that negate them also do not exist because they have no opposite and no basis, just like the imputation of self. Therefore, those who desire liberation should abandon all eight inversions. Second, the result established by negation: Thus, when the inversions of non-virtuous perception cease, their cause, ignorance, will cease, and when ignorance ceases, then all that culminates in old age and death, beginning with actions, will cease. Second, refuting the proof of existence: If the object to be negated, ignorance, does not exist, then what will cease? Just as no one seeks a way to abandon thorns in the sky that do not exist. Therefore, its results exist, and if so, why would existence not be established? Such an object to be abandoned does not exist ultimately, for if it exists, it exists by its own nature or it does not exist. If the afflictions of some individuals exist by their own nature, then since nature cannot be reversed, how can they be abandoned? Because its reason exists, who would abandon it? Just as one cannot abandon the unobscured space. If the afflictions of some individuals do not exist by their own nature, then how can they be abandoned? Since it does not exist, who would abandon it? Because there is nothing to be abandoned. The second is the examination of inversions, called the twenty-third chapter. The twenty-fourth chapter examines the four truths. The connection of the sutra is: Manjushri, seeing that actions do not arise, is to fully know suffering. And so on.
