It is not for the purpose of generating elaboration. Likewise, for the sake of the true meaning, it is not said that the Tathagata is empty, nor is it said that it is not empty and truly exists, nor is it said that the Tathagata is both or neither, because there is no elaboration of the four extremes. What then? It is said to be empty, etc., in order to enter the ultimate meaning, to eliminate superimposition, or to establish conventional terms. Not only does the Tathagata not possess the four, such as emptiness, but also the elaboration of the four natures, such as permanence and impermanence, which are said to be two or not two, are all pacified. How can this Tathagata have them? It does not exist. How can the four, such as having an end and not having an end, be pacified here? Because the Tathagata is the nature of being free from all elaborations, and has become Suchness and Dharmadhatu, therefore it is distinguished. In the translation of Buddhapalita, it is said: Whoever holds on to the dense grasping, He then, after Nirvana, Whether the Tathagata exists or does not exist, Makes such distinctions. Etc., the translation is well spoken. Any person who is held by the firm grasping of manifest attachment, saying that the Tathagata exists by nature, then after the Buddha's passing into Nirvana, from then on, he makes distinctions with distinctions such as existence or non-existence, but the Tathagata is seen as empty by nature, then after the Buddha's Nirvana, The idea that he still exists or is cut off and does not exist is not reasonable. All those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are beyond all elaborations, and because they are unborn, they are not destroyed, and they never end. Those who elaborate on existence, non-existence, permanence, impermanence, etc., with the elaborations of their own minds, lose the wisdom of correct views. All of them will not be able to see the Tathagata, because they elaborate on the equality of its nature, which has no birth, death, decrease, or increase, with the object of inverted elaboration. How are these three kinds of reasoning applied to other things? The nature of the Tathagata is free from elaboration, and that is the nature of this world, because nature is equal to all dharmas. The reason is that the Dharma nature of the Tathagata without self-nature is the same as

This understanding also lacks inherent existence, hence it is undifferentiated equality. The second is the chapter called "Examination of the Tathagata," which is the twenty-second chapter. The twenty-third chapter is the chapter on examining perversions. The connection to the sutra: The meaning of "form is pure because desire is completely pure" and so on from the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra is related to the chapter. The stream of existence exists because its cause exists. If one thinks, "Thus, karma is accumulated by afflictions, and from this, continuous existence is born," then, to show that afflictions lack inherent existence, there are two parts: the text and the name. The first has two parts: refuting afflictions and refuting the proof of their existence. The first has two parts: showing the common refutation and showing the individual refutation. The first has four parts: refuting with the reasoning of dependent origination, refuting with the reasoning of no basis, refuting with the reasoning of no cause, and refuting with the reasoning of no object. The first is: Afflictions do not exist. Why is that? As it says in the sutra: "Desire, your root, know that it arises from complete conceptualization." Thus, the cause of all afflictions is complete conceptualization, and the three mentioned here are the root of all afflictions. That is, attachment arises from relying on the complete conceptualization of the desirable, hatred arises from relying on the undesirable, and ignorance arises from relying on perversion. Thus, the Buddhas have said that attachment, hatred, and ignorance arise from the common cause of complete conceptualization, and their individual causes arise in dependence on their objects, the desirable, the undesirable, and perversion, respectively. Therefore, those that arise from the desirable, the undesirable, and perversion, those that arise in dependence on them, are not established by their own nature, and therefore afflictions and so on do not truly exist. The second is: The inherent existence or non-existence of the self of a person, in whatever way, has already been refuted in the examination of the self as not being established by its own nature. If that basis does not exist, then how can the existence or non-existence of afflictions be established? It cannot be established. Afflictions are like a painting on a wall, relying on a basis, so if the self or sentient being to whom those afflictions belong is not established as existing, then there is no basis whatsoever.
