There is no arising or occurring without non-existence. Destruction is contrary to arising, so how can the two exist together? For that reason, death and birth cannot exist at the same time. Similarly, how can arising exist without destruction? Because all things are impermanent, there is never a time when they are not impermanent, and as soon as something arises, it is pervaded by impermanence. How can arising and destruction exist together? Because birth and death cannot exist at the same time. Third, the summary meaning is: Like this, arising and destruction, whether together or not together, cannot be established separately, they are like the left and right horns of a cow, how can they be established by their own nature? They are not. It is impossible for arising to occur to a pre-existing and exhausted entity, just as it is contrary to arising when a candle is extinguished. There is also no arising for what is not exhausted, because the established entity is in the process of disappearing. Similarly, it is impossible for destruction to occur to what is exhausted, because there is no basis for destruction. There is also no destruction for what is not exhausted, because it is contrary to destruction. Third, refuting establishment as the basis and the based: Arising and destruction exist, because there is an entity that serves as the basis for the two. If you say so, it is unreasonable, because there is no entity, or the two depend on each other, and nothing can be established. Like this, without an entity as the basis, its nature of arising and destruction is also impossible, because without a basis, the based is impossible. Because arising and destruction have already been refuted, without arising and destruction, the entity is also impossible. Therefore, the entity as the basis cannot be established. Fourth, refuting by examining emptiness and non-emptiness: If there is arising and destruction, does it cause arising and destruction to an empty entity? Or does it cause arising and destruction to a non-empty entity? Neither case is reasonable, because for an empty entity, arising and destruction are unreasonable, just like space. For a non-empty entity, change is unreasonable, and without dependence, arising and destruction are unreasonable. Fifth, refuting by examining one and many: If there is arising and destruction, is the entity one or different? Arising and destruction are mutually

Because of contradiction, it is unreasonable to be one like light and darkness. Arising and destruction are also unreasonable in their own nature, because they must be observed independently. Regarding this unreasonableness, the commentaries say that because they rely on things like vases, and because they are never contrary to impermanence, and because they do not confuse each other. Because there is no one, one will not be observed, and if there is one, there must be one. Second, refuting the proof of the existence of things is divided into two: refuting the proof of direct perception and refuting the proof of inference. The first is: What is the use of such detailed observation? If you think in your heart that even a shepherd can see the arising and destruction with his own eyes, seeing the arising and destruction is not correct, but the mind is blinded by ignorance, like seeing dizziness and mirages. The second is divided into two: refuting by non-arising and refuting by being too extreme. The first is: If arising and destruction exist, because there are things on which they depend, then, if things exist by their own nature, from what do they arise, things or non-things? Things do not arise from things themselves, because they have already been established and there is no simultaneous cause and effect. Things do not arise from non-things, because they are contradictory and non-things have no power, like a son from a barren woman. Similarly, non-things do not arise from non-things themselves, because both cause and effect do not exist, so there is no ability to produce and be produced. Non-things do not arise from things, because they are contradictory and non-things cannot arise. Thus, if things exist and non-things do not exist, then what is the thing that arises, and what is the thing that is destroyed, and what is the non-thing that has been destroyed? Or, the arising of things does not arise from things, and the destruction of non-things, said Shakyamuni. Similarly, things do not arise from themselves, because arising becomes meaningless and becomes endless. Self-nature is not produced from others, because it has been said in the first chapter. If it is not produced from both self and other, then how do things arise? They will not arise, so things have no arising.
