Even if moments and so on have ceased, if that time is the basis of their sequence, then measurement can make it manifest. Time that does not abide is not apprehended by measurement. The abiding, the object to be grasped, does not exist differently from measurement itself, or if things do not abide, measurement should not grasp them, because the abiding is not different from moments and so on. If that time does not abide between the completion of the measurement of moments before and after, then measurement should not grasp it, and such a time to be grasped Abiding is impossible. That moment is also not graspable when its parts are analyzed. Thus, since time does not abide as the basis of moments and so on, time that has become the basis of measurement is not separately apprehended by measurement apart from moments and so on. Since the time to be grasped, which has the nature of moments and so on, has ceased due to moments and so on, there is no abiding at other times, so it is not taken as the basis of measurement. How can time be called the basis of measurement, like the measurement of a rabbit's horn? If it is said that time depends only on things, because if there are no things, there is no aspect of time, it does not exist. It is true that time is not a permanent phenomenon different from form and so on, but there is time that depends on actions, form, and so on. If it is said that it is what is expressed by moments and so on, even so, if things themselves do not exist, how can the time that depends on them exist, because there are no things to depend on? The second is the chapter on the examination of time, which is the nineteenth chapter. In the twentieth chapter, the analysis of aggregates, the connection of the sutra: Because the world is so vast, appearing as an aggregate, therefore things do not exist, and the aggregate of things does not exist. Such is the meaning. The connection of the analysis: Time exists because it is a co-operative cause for the arising of results. Sprouts arise from the collection of causes and conditions of seeds, the five elements, and time. When they gather and the time is ripe, they ripen into fruit. Thus it is said. If asked: Is it so? To show that it is not established, there are two: the text and the name. The first has three: refuting that the collection of causes and conditions produces results, refuting that the cause produces results, refuting.

The meaning of being established by dependent origination is summarized. The first has three parts: refuting arising from a prior collection, refuting arising simultaneously, and refuting arising from a subsequent collection. The first is: If it is said that the result arises from the collection of causes, does the result arise while abiding in the collection of causes and conditions, or does it arise without abiding? If it is said that the result arises from the collection of causes and conditions, and the result already exists in those collections, then how can it arise from the collection? Because it is already accomplished at the time of the cause, what new thing arises from the collection? It is like something that already exists in a container is not produced by the container. If it is said that the result arises from the collection of causes and conditions, and the result does not already exist in those collections, then how can it arise from the collection? Because the result does not exist, it is like extracting oil from sand. If it is said that the result exists by its own nature in the collection of causes and conditions, then it should be possible to establish by valid cognition that there is this result in the collection, but it cannot be established in the collection because it is not apparent. If it is said that although it exists, it is not visible because there is a hidden cause, so it is not visible until the manifesting condition is complete, then how is it known to exist? By inference, analogy, and scripture. If it is said by the inference that what does not exist does not arise? In that case, the fact that what exists also does not arise is also a problem. If it is said that since it contradicts both sides and also contradicts inference, it is not reasonable for the result to exist in the collection, nor is it reasonable for the result not to exist? We do not only not establish that the result exists in the collection, but we also prevent others from falsely assuming that the result exists by its own nature in the collection. Similarly, we do not establish that the result exists by its own nature in the collection, but we eliminate others' false assumption that the non-existence of the result in it is established by its own nature, because we want to eliminate the two extremes of existence and non-existence and establish the Middle Way. If it is said that if there is no result in the collection of causes and conditions, then the causes and conditions will also be the same as other things that are not causes and conditions, because there is no result in any of them, like charcoal and seeds are the same cause for sprouts. The difference between cause and non-cause.
