The various directions also show that the self and its negation, the absence of self, are not contradictory. Just as the view of self is not true, so too is its antidote, the absence of self, not true. Thus, it is shown that there is no self whatsoever, and there is no absence of self whatsoever. As it is said: "In the sutra, it is said, 'Light Protector, what is called self is one extreme. What is called absence of self is the second extreme. That which is in the middle of these two extremes is formless and cannot be shown.'" The Ratnavali says: "Thus, in reality, self and absence of self are both unobtainable. Therefore, the Great Sage prohibits the views of self and absence of self." Such are the words spoken. Thus, it is said in the Clear Words commentary that it is taught in accordance with the order of lower, intermediate, and higher capacities of those to be trained. Therefore, Aryadeva says: "First, non-merit is prevented; in the middle, the self is to be prevented; finally, all bases of views are prevented; whoever knows this is wise." Also, the sutra says: "Just as the principle of grammar is like teaching the basics of letters, so too the Buddha teaches beings the Dharma according to their capacity to endure." Furthermore, the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra says: "If one engages in 'there is a self,' one does not engage in the Perfection of Wisdom. 'There is no self,'" and so on. It also says, "This aggregate is empty," and so on. If that is the case, and the Buddhas have not taught either self or absence of self, then what have they taught? If there were something to be spoken of in ultimate truth, then it would be shown, but because what is spoken of is not within the realm of words, therefore the Buddhas have not shown anything. Why is there nothing to be spoken of? If there were an object of the mind's activity, then words could enter, but because there is none, that is why. Why is there no object of the mind's activity? Because it is free from both extremes of arising and ceasing. In reality, if that is the case, then in conventional truth, the Victorious One, skilled in means, if the inconceivable nature of reality is not grasped by skillful methods, then no one can directly realize it. Therefore, first, in accordance with the world, the causes and effects of the environment and beings are thoroughly distinguished, and all the establishments of the five aggregates, twelve sources, and eighteen elements are in accordance with what is perceived by the mind with an object, and that is true. Thus, it is first taught.
