These are said to be without inherent existence. If it is thought that action is not appropriate for what is without inherent existence, then action is not appropriate in any way for what has inherent existence, but action is appropriate only by virtue of being without inherent existence. This is shown by example. In the Lamp of Wisdom it says: 'How does the one who manifests emanation show, with the power of perfect magic, emanate and the emanated also emanate others, the emanated also like others. Likewise, whatever action is done by the agent, that too is like the aspect of emanation.' Here, how the one who shows, that is, the Bhagavan, emanates an emanation with the immeasurable power of perfect magic, and when that emanation has been emanated, he emanates another again, which is the second time it is said clearly in the words. Or, that emanation also emanates another, and that emanation again emanates, so that after three generations of emanation, the three emanations are connected to the three ripened results from the agent's action. When those emanations again emanate another emanation, that emanation also, like other emanations, likewise, the agent without inherent existence and whatever action is done is like the aspect of emanation. For example, like an agent, an emanation emanates action and ripened results, and emanates another emanation, just like that. Thus, afflictions and actions, and the body and limbs of ripened results, and the person who does the action and the continuum of ripened results, etc., all the fruits, although they appear without being established by their own nature, are like a city of gandharvas, like a mirage and the appearance of a dream, appearing but without inherent existence. The second is called examining action and result, which is the seventeenth chapter. The eighteenth chapter is the chapter on examining self and phenomena. The connection of the sutra is: form is empty of self and what belongs to self, etc. The connection of the chapter is: in this way, the agent of action and afflictions, etc., like a city of gandharvas, appears to children, but that is not the truth, it is false. So, what is the truth? How should one enter into it? Because inner and outer things are not found, therefore, all ways of clinging to self and what belongs to self in those things are exhausted, and that is the truth here. The way to enter into the truth is: all faults arise from the view of the perishable.

Having understood, there are two investigations into this: the text and the title. The first part has three: the order of entering Suchness, the explanation of the nature of Suchness, and the result of studying Suchness. The first part has three: refuting the self and what belongs to the self, how liberation is attained by the exhaustion of clinging, and abandoning contradictions with the scriptures. The first part is: Buddha Protected also said that the eighteenth chapter is like the essence of explaining Suchness. Regarding this, if there is a self held by innate self-grasping, then is it one with or different from the aggregates? This is to be investigated. Just as in the "Examination of the Tathagata" and "Examination of Fire and Fuel," etc., it is examined from five aspects, here it is condensed into two aspects as the essence of those. Among them, according to the first view, if these five aggregates are the self, then the self will also become something that has birth and death, is multiple, and is not a close grasping, because there is no difference between the aggregates and the essence. If the self is other than the aggregates, then the characteristics of the aggregates, namely the three states of arising, abiding, and ceasing, will also cease to exist. If it is accepted, then the self does not exist, because it will be a non-composite. A non-composite has no essence, like a flower in the sky. For permanence, it is meaningless to initiate actions for the sake of the self. Therefore, if the essence of the self does not exist, how can the aggregates, etc., that belong to the self exist? Because they depend on the self. Thus, since the object of focus, the self and what belongs to the self, cannot be determined, or is naturally pacified, both the self-grasping and the grasping of what belongs to the self, which have it as their object, will be reversed and cease to exist. The second part is: there is a yogi who sees the absence of grasping at the self and what belongs to the self. Therefore, the self is established. If you say so, then the yogi who sees the absence of grasping at the self and what belongs to the self cannot be different from the self and the aggregates, so it does not have the nature of the self. The yogi who sees the absence of grasping at the self and what belongs to the self also does not see the self. Therefore, seeing that the yogi without grasping at the self and what belongs to the self exists by nature, that view does not see the meaning of Suchness and cannot abandon the view of the destructible collection. All afflictions have the view of the destructible collection as their root, and without it, all close grasping is exhausted, and no karma is accumulated.
