If the earth is an established existent, then there is no need to establish it; if it is non-existent, then it cannot be established, so it cannot be established; if it is both existent and non-existent, then it is contradictory and impossible, so neither can be established as something to be established, then how can one say that these are the causes of the establisher? If it is impossible like this, then it is unreasonable to say that there is a cause of the cause. Furthermore, refuting the objective condition, what is the dharma that has an object? The answer is: all mental and mental factors. If one says: forms and other objects are objective conditions. Then, for this, does one make the objective condition for a mind that has an object, or for one that does not? If it is the former, then to think that for this dharma that has an object, there is an object or something to be grasped that is the cause, this is merely showing meaninglessness, because it already exists before the cause, therefore the objective condition is meaningless. If it is the latter, then if the dharma that is the object is without an object or does not exist, then how can the object that is its condition exist? Because there is no object. Thus, one has examined the existence and non-existence of the fruit, that is, having an object. Similarly, does one make an object of an existing object, or of a non-existing one? For an existing dharma, there is no object, because a simultaneous condition and conditioned cannot exist, therefore it cannot be a condition; for a non-existing thing, it is unreasonable to be an objective condition, just like the son of a barren woman. In either case, the example of non-existence is like the son of a barren woman, that is, a barren woman has no objective condition, or the son of a barren woman himself cannot be an objective condition. Furthermore, refuting the immediate condition, if the dharmas of the fruit, such as sprouts, have not arisen, then the cessation of the causes such as seeds is unreasonable. Because there is no cessation, the dharma that has just ceased is a similar immediate condition, this statement is unreasonable. If the seed has ceased before the sprout has arisen, then what is the cause of the sprout arising? And what is the cause of the seed ceasing? These two will become without cause. Even if it has ceased, it cannot be a condition, because cessation is merely non-existence, therefore non-existence cannot be a condition. This is from the Commentary on Valid Cognition. Or, considering the refutation of the four extremes of arising, if the dharma has not arisen, then what will cease? This is from the Clear Words. If it has ceased, then what is the condition? This statement is about arising and ceasing.
