Unfinished. Second, refuting opposing views: Some people believe that "the nature of earth is hardness," clinging to the idea that phenomena themselves have inherent existence; and like the view that "eye consciousness is different from the eye faculty," they see a real other; and they cling to the notion that "eye consciousness, which has the ability to function, is real in the present, and that which is separated from it, such as the past, is non-existent," those who hold these views have not seen the ultimate truth of dependent origination, which is supremely profound in the Buddha's teachings. Because the nature of dependent origination is not in any of those four. The Buddhas have realized the ultimate truth of things, and therefore they teach the nature without error, and do not teach it in a reversed or confused way. Therefore, it is never contradictory to reason. Therefore, the wise follow that one and only truth. Thus, also relying on scriptural authority, the Blessed One, who knows all knowable things such as existence and non-existence, said in the Sutra of the "Katāyānāvavāda": "Katāyāna, because this world mostly clings to existence and non-existence, therefore, they will not be completely liberated from birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and agitation, nor will they be completely liberated from the suffering caused by death." Therefore, the Buddha refuted both views of existence and non-existence. This sutra is a scriptural authority recited by all schools, so it is quoted and cannot transcend the scriptures. If any dharma has inherent existence, then it will not become non-existent again. Any nature, whether caused by conditions or by its own essence, cannot change. Because if there is an unconditioned nature, then it is already established in itself and does not need to depend on anything. The nature of that which does not depend on anything cannot be abandoned at any time. Just as the non-obscuring nature of space is considered to be unchanging, it must also be admitted in the same way. Furthermore, if the nature of any dharma does not exist, then what is the change that is seen? This is like the dance of a demoness, which is unreasonable. If nature exists, how can it change?

It is acceptable or not acceptable. Alternatively, this verse itself asserts that, without making the first half prior, it states that change is not appropriate for either self-nature absence or existence. This is the tradition of Buddhapālita. Third, advising to train the mind in Madhyamaka: Therefore, when contemplating the nature of reality, the assertion that "this thing exists" is to be grasped as permanence, and the assertion that "this thing does not exist" is to be viewed as annihilation. That is, regarding the object of the mind, if one grasps that "this exists," considering it to have self-nature, then for something with self-nature, emptiness and other changes are not appropriate, thus it becomes the opposite of non-existence, which is the view of permanence. If one grasps that "this does not exist," a perception arises as if something that previously existed has vanished without any remainder, and this is viewing the previously existing thing as annihilated. For the view that self-nature is absent, both of these are absent. Thinking that there is merely existence and merely non-existence, and that self-nature is not established, although it does not become a gross view of permanence and annihilation, as long as one clings to each of them, one will not transcend the proliferation of signs. Therefore, the medicine of negation relies on the existence of the disease of grasping at truth. By simultaneously administering the disease and the medicine, and abiding in the freedom from the four extremes, which is the pacification of all painful proliferations of signs, even the subtle proliferations of permanence and annihilation of grasping at subject and object are abandoned. In short, it negates self-nature existence, but does not solely establish self-nature absence. The Clear Words states: "Having eliminated these two views, one should meditate on the Middle Way as it is." In short, just as one must rely on medicine without removing the disease, as long as the object to be negated is not refuted, the clinging to negation will increase. But if it is refuted, one will cling to "nothing exists," and if one aims at a mere non-existence separate from existence, how can one correctly understand emptiness, non-emptiness, etc., from the Root Wisdom onward? The mind that does not perceive true establishment and the mind that grasps at true emptiness are very different, as Shakya Supreme Friend said. Therefore, in order not to fall into extreme views, the wise, skilled in the true meaning of existence and non-existence, should never abide in such extreme views. Why is it permanence and annihilation? Because whatever exists by essence or self-nature is contradictory to non-existence in every way, therefore it is not non-existence, so it is permanent. And whatever thing, the previously existing existence has ceased, and now it is said to not exist
