Three Sections: Refuting the elaborations of the four extremes, disparaging views towards opposing sides, and advising to cultivate the mind in the Middle Way. The first section has two parts: Refuting inherent existence and other-existence, and refuting existence and non-existence. The first part is: Therefore, the absence of inherent existence arises from dependence, but for something with inherent existence, it can never arise from dependence. If aggregates, sprouts, etc., had inherent existence, they could not arise from the causes and conditions of ignorance and seeds, etc., because their own nature already exists, and they do not need a cause, like the present aggregates and sprouts. If one thinks that although there was no inherent existence before the thing, its inherent existence arose from causes and conditions, then it would follow that it is something made. If one thinks, what is the contradiction? It is not permissible because they contradict each other, like heat in water, the dharma is not its own nature, so it cannot be its inherent existence. So, what is called inherent existence? Inherent existence is the unaltered nature of that dharma. Anything that is altered or arises from conditions does not have that nature from the beginning, so it cannot be its inherent existence, like colored glass. In this way, since it does not arise from conditions, it can never be independently established as being able to withstand analysis of its essence, so one can never find what is called "this is inherent existence," and one can never find something established by inherent existence. Merely not finding inherent existence, from the perspective that it is the way things are, it is called seeing the ultimate reality, but there is nothing to say that one has seen this, like saying one has seen the sky, etc. And not seeing is the supreme seeing. Not seeing anything is like a blind person not seeing forms. It is not merely the negation of seeing, but like a sighted person looking at the sky, seeing with intelligent wisdom that all elaborations are without inherent existence. To this, someone says: Thinking in this way, since the inherent existence of things has been refuted, self-existence has been refuted, but other-existence has inherent existence because it has not been refuted. If it has been established that something is without inherent existence, then there is no reason why its particularity, other-existence, should have inherent existence. Here, the term "essence" in the early translation and "inherent existence" in the later translation are only differences in translation, and there is no difference in meaning in reality. The essence or inherent existence of things cannot arise from causes and conditions, because it has already been established, like the present sprout. If

If it arises, then the nature that arises from cause and condition is not the true nature, but is made or fabricated by others, how can it be its nature? How can it be appropriate for nature to be fabricated? Just as heat in water does not become its nature. So, what is nature like? Nature is the true and upright reality, not fabricated by other causes and conditions, not dependent on other causes and conditions, and does not change, it is the original essence. The example is: the Dharmata of non-duality and freedom from elaboration. Whether the Tathagatas come or not, the Dharmata of all phenomena remains as it is, so it is said. Thus, if things do not have their own nature, then how can there be the nature of other things? What is the other thing, its essence or nature, is dependent on its own nature, and then it is said to be the nature of the other thing. The second is: Thus, even if there is no self-nature and other things, will there be just things? If there is a thing other than these two, even if there are not these two, things can be established, but there is not. How is it? All dharmas, its own essence or nature, and other things, etc., where is the other thing other than these two? There is not. Therefore, if there is a thing other than its own nature and other things, then the thing will also be established, but it is impossible. If things are negated, but non-things exist, if this is the case, then will its companion things also exist? If non-things exist, then it would be like this, but it does not exist. If the thing itself is not established, then the non-thing that depends on it will not be established. Because people in the world say that the current things such as bottles become other, that is, the previous things do not exist. The independent non-thing that is not merely the elimination of what is to be refuted will never be established. If it is established, how can it be a non-thing? If it is obstructive, it is like not being space. Here, the truth is denied to the non-existent non-thing of the knowable to be refuted, and it is easy to understand that it is refuted by this power.
