It is not done by me, because that suffering is not done by itself, because it is contradictory for oneself to do to oneself. If it is not done by a self that is established by nature as different from the aggregates, then how could suffering be done by another? It would not be. Therefore, considering that suffering is done by the person himself, and that the person is not different from suffering, it is said that suffering is done by suffering. And if one considers that the person is not suffering, one thinks that it is done by another. The first two sentences negate the self-done, the first sentence negates the suffering done by the self because there is no self different from the aggregates, and the second sentence negates the suffering itself done by suffering. The latter two sentences negate the suffering or the self other than the five aggregates, so they negate the suffering done by another, as stated by Buddhapālita. Furthermore, the first sentence says that suffering is not done by the self of another or one's own sentient being, the second sentence says that suffering is not done by itself, and the latter two sentences seem to explain that it is not done by another. Fourth, refuting what is done by both, if one thinks that suffering is not done by me and him separately, but by the collection of both, that is unreasonable. If either me or him alone did the suffering, then the suffering might be done by both together, but since the separate actions have already been refuted, both faults will be committed. In this regard, just as there is no chariot on each limb, but the collection is established as a chariot, this is a relative imputation, so it cannot be like that here, just as if each killer does not kill separately, it cannot be established that these two killed. Because there will never be a collective agent other than me and him, it is not done by both. Fifth, refuting arising without a cause, suffering that is not done by me, nor by him, nor by both, how could it be without a cause? Like the fragrance of a flower in the sky. Without a cause, it is either constant or impermanent, so it is never possible. Third, extending this reasoning to other things, not only do the five aggregates or pure suffering of the inner sentient being continuum not have four situations such as being done by me, but also external objects such as land, sprouts, vases, felt, etc., do not have me.

The four modes of action, etc., do not exist. Therefore, if examined from the ultimate point of view, suffering and the like are without inherent existence because the scope of the four extremes of arising is negated. But in conventional terms, as explained in the eighth chapter, one should view dependent arising, such as, "Suffering is created by me," etc., "You say it arises from conditions." As it does not arise in the four extremes, it exists in the manner of an illusion-like dependent arising. The second is called "Examination of Suffering, Whether Created by Self or Others," which is the twelfth chapter. The thirteenth chapter is the chapter on examining suchness or formations. The connection with the sutra is: "Monks, the ultimate truth is only one, which is the non-deceptive nirvana. All formations are of a deceptive nature," and so forth. The connection with the chapter is: Thus, when examined, all phenomena are devoid of the four extremes of arising and therefore lack inherent existence. However, due to the dimness of ignorance, those whose eye of wisdom is impaired also perceive them as having the nature of arising from inherent existence, just as those who do not understand illusion are deceived by illusory horses, cattle, and so on. Therefore, the Tathagata, who sees all knowable things with clarity and is free from dimness, says in the sutra: "Monks, whatever is a deceptive formation is false, and whatever is the non-deceptive nirvana is the ultimate truth." Among them, the deceptive nature is that which deludes and appears in a reversed manner, like a fire wheel. There are two parts to the teaching: the text and the title. The first has four parts: stating the intention of the scripture, refuting the interpretation of the intention as something else, dispelling the arguments of others, and the necessity of teaching emptiness. The first is: The Blessed One said, "Whatever is a deceptive dharma is false." Therefore, all formations are not of that nature, but are so from the aspect of the deceptive and reversed appearance. Therefore, these formations are to be examined as empty, or false, or conventional, like water in a mirage. If the words "false" and "deceptive" both mean non-existent, how can falsity be established by a deceptive dharma? If all formations are viewed as false or non-existent, then that which is capable of performing a function...
