Moreover, concerning the senses and feelings, etc., and the arising of the indistinct aggregates of name and form, etc., the agent that appropriates them is not present before that, which is impossible. Secondly, others are also refuted in that way: If, as analyzed by the reasoning explained before, the self that is the agent of appropriation is absent in all of seeing, hearing, etc., and feelings, etc., then the objects to be appropriated, such as seeing, etc., are also naturally nonexistent. Thirdly, summarizing the meaning established by refutation: The self that is the agent of appropriation does not exist before, now, or after seeing, etc. For it has already been refuted that it exists before the object to be appropriated. If it exists after, then the object to be appropriated must exist before the agent of appropriation, which would be similar to becoming causeless. Simultaneous existence is not established in its own nature, because there is no simultaneity when they are established separately, etc., as explained above. Therefore, the thought that the agent of appropriation exists or does not exist will be reversed. If that is the case, the Commentary on the Words says: "Do you thus ascertain that there is no self? Who said that? Is it not that you have stated the inference that there is no self because there is no seeing, etc.?" The reply is: "We have said that, but you have not correctly determined this meaning. For it is an investigation of whether the self exists as a real entity. That is not self-existent, nor is it truly the self, but it is a statement to counteract perversion, to turn back the attachment to its appearing as self-existent. This is not an investigation of the nonexistence of entities, but rather these two are to be abandoned: namely, attachment to entities and attachment to nonexistence. So who would think of existence or nonexistence in relation to a nature that does not observe its own nature?" The second is: "Analysis of What Exists Before, or the Agent of Appropriation and the Object to be Appropriated," which is the ninth chapter. The tenth chapter is the analysis of fire and fuel. The connection to the sutra is: Just as from the aggregation of rough wood, a rough drill, and the effort of the hand, fire will arise from these causes, and having arisen, it performs its function.

Quickly cease. Thereafter, the wise will seek, "From where did this (referring to life) come, and where did it go?" Just as searching everywhere for its coming and going is not found. The aggregates, the sources, the elements, are empty inside and empty outside. All are devoid of self and without a place to abide. The characteristic of dharma is the very nature of space. Such and so on explain the meaning, and analyze the connection. If it is said that the grasper, the self, and the grasped exist, because they are mutually dependent, like fire and firewood. To show that this is not established, there are two parts: the text and the title. The first part has three points: refuting fire and firewood; applying this reasoning to other aspects; and disparaging those who hold views that are inconsistent with this. The first part also has three points: first, refuting by analyzing; refuting the existence of dependence; and summarizing the view established by the refutation. The first point is to refute the existence of one by analyzing one and different: the claim that the grasper and the grasped are not established by nature is unreasonable, because people see that things are interdependent and have an inherent essence. For example, although fire arises in dependence on firewood, it is not without the nature of fire, because the nature of heat and burning and its results can be observed. Similarly, although firewood exists in dependence on fire, it also has its nature, because it is combustible and has the nature of the four elements. If someone thinks that both of these exist, that would be the case, but that is not the case. If the firewood to be burned is the same in essence as the burning fire, then the agent and the action would become the same. If that were the case, the potter and the pot would also become the same, which is unreasonable. The second point is to refute the existence of otherness, which is divided into three parts: refuting by absurd inference; refuting the defense against errors; and showing other harmful arguments. The first point is: if fire is different in essence from wood, then like a vase and cloth, fire should also be able to burn without depending on wood. If that were the case, even without firewood, fire should always burn, and fire as the cause of burning should not arise from firewood. 1. The act of igniting firewood, etc., would become meaningless. 2. If the act of igniting, etc., never occurred, then the fire would not have the function of burning, so it would become a burner without burning, and firewood, etc., would depend on other things.
