So-called "non-inherent existence," what object of refutation would that become the non-existence of? If it is not so: If things do not exist, the non-existence of things will not be established, people will say the non-existence of things. If we analyze it in this way, even if it is just a mere term, if things are not established, how can their non-existence exist? It is impossible. The second case is: There are things and non-things, because there are people like you here who hold the two as real. Then, the person who clings, whether it is a thing, a non-thing, something that does not conform to the two, or which of the three aggregates of persons with the same dharma nature of things and non-things knows or clings to things and non-things? None of these three is reasonable, because it has been said above that things and non-things in general have been refuted, and for contradictory things, it is impossible to have three aggregates on the side of refutation. Fourth, to summarize the established meaning through negation: Because it is unreasonable to establish a definition, space is neither a thing nor a non-thing, neither a subject to be established nor a definition. Second, applying this reasoning to other things: The other five elements such as earth and water are the same as the analysis of space. For example: When the definition of earth comes first, earth does not exist at all. And so on, transform and analyze all things as before. Someone asks: Isn't this revealing the sect of slandering and abandoning things? The Prajñāpradīpa says: It only refutes the nature of existence, and does not say that it is non-existence. Here it is to prevent existence, not to completely cling to non-existence. Just like saying it is not black, it does not mean it is white. Buddhapālita says: It is not said that the aggregates etc. do not exist, but to eliminate their inherent existence. Clinging to the two extremes is a fault, and below it says: Saying there is, is clinging to permanence. And so on, guide these verses to a reasonable meaning. Here, Śāntarakṣita says: Existence and non-existence are both extremes, purity and impurity are also extremes. Therefore, abandoning all extremes of the two extremes, the wise do not dwell in the middle way either. And so on, just like this, with the intellect that refutes all extremes, one does not cling to the notion that this is free from elaboration, but on the sprout and so on.

Because for not seeing anything, therefore with subsequent knowledge, one does not establish any elaboration such as existence or non-existence in any place, therefore it is called free from elaboration, as it is well said. Third, criticizing the view of clinging to extremes is: Thus, although the nature of all phenomena is thus abiding, those of small intellect who are obscured by the darkness of ignorance, do not understand the nature of being free from elaboration, which is free from the extremes of existence and non-existence of phenomena, and think that it exists, or that it does not exist. This view is not the ultimate truth view to be practiced, it is the pacification of the elaboration of conceptualization, the dharmakaya emptiness that permanently pacifies suffering and so on cannot be seen, therefore it is a conceptualization with clinging to extremes. Second, the name is: The chapter on examining the elements, called the fifth chapter. Sixth, in the chapter on examining desire and attachment, the connection of the sutra is: In the mother sutra, it says, because desire is completely purified, form is completely purified, etc. The connection of the chapter is: The aggregates, elements, and sense bases exist, because the afflictions that depend on them exist, one thinks. To show that it does not exist, there are two things: the treatise and the name. First, there are two: refuting afflictions such as desire, and applying this reasoning to other places. First, there are three: refuting arising in sequence, refuting arising simultaneously, and summarizing the meaning of these. The first is: The aggregates, elements, and sense bases exist, because the afflictions that depend on them exist, if there is no basis, then there is no dependent, like the afflictions of a barren woman's child. Also, the cause that arises depending on what affliction is focused on exists, the sutra says: Monks, all uneducated common people always fall, because after the eyes see forms, they cling to pleasant places and become attached. Thinking like this, but this is not reasonable, how is it? Desire is a mental event that has the aspect of existence in a desirable object that is contaminated, and attachment is the desire for an object or a person, which is the basis of desire. Here, if desire exists by its own nature, then does attachment exist before or not? If it is like the first, if there is attachment without desire before desire, then depending on attachment, desire should also exist. But attachment exists before.
