If the opponent, as proof that it is not empty, lists whatever is perceived, etc., and speaks words of response, then this does not in any way become a true answer, because that very answer of proof is also the same as what is to be proven, and therefore can be refuted. Furthermore, if the Madhyamikas who speak of emptiness say that all phenomena are without inherent existence, if someone doubts this and criticizes it, thinking it is not reasonable, then this does not become a complete criticism, because the reason for the criticism is also the same as what is to be proven, and can be shown to be without inherent existence. Second is the name: it is called the Aggregate Examination, which is the fourth chapter. Fifth is the chapter on the Examination of Elements. The connection to the Sutra: In the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, it says: The earth element has no inherent existence, etc. The connection to the chapter: Elements such as earth exist, because their characteristics are distinctly established. If it is asked: To show that it does not exist, there are two things: the text and the name. The first has three parts: refuting the space element, applying that reasoning to others, and denigrating the view of clinging to extremes. The first has four parts: refuting the basis of the characteristic, refuting the way the characteristic applies, refuting the existent and the non-existent, and summarizing the meaning established by the refutation. The first is: The Bhagavan also said: Great King, this person is the sixth element. If someone says that their characteristics are solidity, liquidity, warmth, movement, and non-obstruction, and that it is reasonable to distinguish them separately, then if the characteristic is established, the basis of the characteristic can be established. But it is not established because the proof is the same as what is to be proven. The characteristic and the characterized are mutually dependent and do not exist by their own nature. Therefore, the characteristic of non-obstruction cannot prove the existence of the basis of the characteristic, space itself. For example, before the characteristic of space, non-obstruction, there is not even a little space as the basis for the application of the characteristic, because if the basis of the characteristic, space, existed before the characteristic, then the space before should not have the characteristic of non-obstruction, but this is impossible, because the object of the basis of the characteristic without the characteristic is nothing at any time or place.

I am also non-existent, like the son of a barren woman. Therefore, if the object of dependence, the entity of the base of designation, which lacks inherent existence, never exists, then where will the dependent characteristic abide? It will not abide. Secondly, furthermore, if a characteristic abides, does it abide in something that previously lacked that characteristic, or in something that possesses the characteristic, or in something other than those two? If we examine, a characteristic cannot possibly abide in something that previously lacked that characteristic, because it lacks the characteristic, so it cannot abide. Because it is devoid of the characteristic, it is not even possible in name, like a rabbit's horn. It also does not abide in something that possesses the characteristic, because what is already established cannot be established again, so a second characteristic is unnecessary. If it is necessary, then there would be an infinite regress, and the characteristic would never be established, and the base of designation would become multiple, and so on. It is also not possible to abide in something other than that which possesses the characteristic and that which lacks the characteristic, because those two are mutually exclusive, so it is impossible for there to be a common basis that is both of those two or neither of those two. If the characteristic does not abide in that way, but the base of designation exists, if the characteristic does not abide, then it is not reasonable to call it a base of designation, because the base of designation must be established by the reason that the characteristic abides. Again, you have refuted the characteristic abiding in the base of designation, but you have not refuted the characteristic itself, so the characteristic exists, and because it exists, the base of designation is also established. This is not the case. If the characteristic of the dependent itself is not reasonable to exist, then the characteristic of that dependent does not exist, like the appearance of the daughter of a barren woman. Therefore, the characteristic of the dependent does not exist, and because the dependent does not exist, the characteristic of the dependent also does not exist, so neither of the two exists. This is the conclusion. Thirdly, refuting the existent and the non-existent is divided into two: refuting the object to be proven and refuting the means of proof. The first is: Again, if it is like that, even if we examine each name and designatum individually and they do not exist, the entity of space itself exists, and if it exists, then the name and designatum are also established. This is not the case. Apart from the base of designation and the characteristic that have already been refuted, the entity called space is also not even nominally existent, like a sky flower. Furthermore, some say that even if space is not established as an entity that reveals space, space will exist in the nature of non-existence. If the entity called existent does not exist, then
