Thus should one act. For those of high intellect, There are two supreme joys in this life: Fulfillment of desires, complete and abundant, And the other is abandoning worldly affairs. There are two paths of the noble: Like the crest of flowers, Universally revered by all in the world, Or dwelling in the forest itself. When fortune turns its back, And effort becomes meaningless, When the noble become impoverished, There is no happiness other than in the forest. For those who know and respect virtue, The wise should dwell in that place. Like a jewel among venomous snakes, One should not dwell in the company of the wicked. A swan is not beautiful in a gathering of crows, A wise person is not beautiful in a gathering of donkeys, A lion is not beautiful in a gathering of foxes, How can a wise person be beautiful in a gathering of fools? The fool says, "This is my well," Abandoning other clear water, like drinking salty water. When there are other places to go, Why cling to bad company and places? It is pleasant to dwell in a joyful and harmonious place, It is pleasant to be with stable and trustworthy friends, It is pleasant to accumulate merit and rely on the holy, It is pleasant to be content, wealthy, and free. In childhood, one is controlled by parents, In youth, one is controlled by friends, In old age, one is controlled by sons, A fool is never free. Because one is not independent, one cannot attain virtue, Nor can one protect oneself. Therefore, one should always be independent, And strive for one's own needs. All independence is happiness, All dependence is suffering. Having gained independence, towards virtue, It is even more pleasant to strive. Without being frightened by disease, Strive to be with the holy ones. A day without being despised by others, Is better than a hundred years. Giving without expecting a return, Helping without expecting friendship, Teaching the Dharma without defilement, Is the mark of a great being. As long as the full moon of a time of suffering, Has not been found by the great planet of death, Until then, one should dwell with mindfulness, And properly protect one's lineage and virtue. Time is short, but the manifestations of wisdom are many, And the length of life is unknown. Like a swan separating milk from water, For what is cherished
