Without arrogance. Even if glory is great, one can endure and be content, even if one becomes higher, without pride, these people are the best. If one associates with the powerful, who would not become great? A garland strung together with thread, will be worn on the head. When associating with the holy ones, one's own continuum will possess qualities. Ore together with a cintamani, will be transformed into gold. What use is a garland to a donkey livestock? What use is delicious food to a domestic pig? What use is sight to the blind? What use is song to the deaf? What use is Dharma to the foolish? To the guru who gives only one word, if one does not prostrate and offer, it is said that one will be reborn as a dog a hundred times, and be born into a bad caste. Wisdom should be learned in youth, cattle should be raised in winter, fields should be plowed when warm and moist, these three are the causes for the ripening of fruit. Ant castles, earth and honey, the waxing moon and the wisdom of learning, the wealth of kings and the wealth of beggars, accumulate little by little and increase. One should strive to acquire qualities, what use is it to show off? Arrogance without qualities, is only self-deprecation. For those who are distracted by small pleasures, how can great qualities arise? Therefore, when learning, overcome all suffering, and strive to learn qualities. Without hearing the places of wisdom and the sacred scriptures, one will not understand. Through hearing, for all places of what to take and what to leave, one will open the good eyes of wisdom. For the wisdom that has not relied on a truly wise teacher, like the son of a prostitute, it will not become a true source. For noble lineage and ancestry, and learned and holy people, merely relying on and tracing the source, one will be respected by others. If one can study well and thoroughly, even knowing only one scripture is like the sun. Even mastering many scriptures with doubt, is like the stars. For the meaning of what is heard, one should single-mindedly, analyze through the path of reason, if one does not find the certainty arising from thought, then hearing and reading are mostly like parrots. Without the wisdom to distinguish between caste and non-caste, not pursuing the meaning of hearing and merit, merely spending time by filling the stomach and engaging in sexual activity, what is the difference between the wisdom of such a person and livestock? Even if one is old and frail, one should strive.

Listen, contemplate, and cultivate wisdom. By subduing one's mind with wisdom, one can become wise in future lives as well. Knowledge that remains only in books, secret mantras that have not been practiced, and items that have not been stored properly are difficult to obtain when needed. The king should always be diligent in all the good things of this life and the next, as well as the welfare of all his subjects, and should not postpone things due to laziness. If one is devoid of diligence, even small tasks are difficult to accomplish. If one possesses diligence, all virtues are like being held in one's own hands. One is one's own protector; how can another be a protector? Therefore, those who understand their own benefit should be diligent in acquiring virtues. If you want to displease your enemies, you must possess virtues yourself. With an angry mind and harsh words, you cannot subdue others; instead, you will harm yourself. Excellent individuals become even more courageous and wise in times of decline and distress. When thick darkness envelops, the lamp shines even brighter. If someone is fearless when angry and cannot bestow benefits when happy, and has neither punishment nor favor, what is the use of their joy or anger? If one does not repay kindness when given, and does not retaliate when harmed, such a powerless person is like a pile of stones by the roadside and will be despised by all. Wise and excellent heroes repay even small favors greatly, and do not become angry even when harmed greatly, remaining like the earth. Others who have not attained their sphere of activity, recognizing benefit and harm, and possessing the power to punish and bestow favor, will be respected by all. When one is able to behead, one is also able to bestow a kingdom when happy. If one does not possess great power, there is no need to be called a king. One should not do what one is incapable of, even if others force one to do it. Just saying "Good! Good!", who would jump into the fire? What is the use of skillful means? If one sees that something can be accomplished even if it is difficult, one should not retreat even if others try to stop one. The wise are like obtaining precious jewels, like taking a jewel from the head of a venomous snake. Even for small tasks, one should act with caution and never be reckless. Like a leper approaching a fire, fools enter dangerous places. Those who dwell in peace should not do such things. For a person who eats what is wholesome...
