The accumulation of merit from offering to all the Buddhas is immeasurable and boundless. Thus it is said. In the 'Wisdom Supreme Tantra' it says: Better than offering to the Buddhas of a kalpa, if one drop of oil is applied to a single hair of the Guru, the accumulation of merit is particularly superior. Thus it is said. The Three Jewels are the supreme field of merit, from the 'Ratnakuta Sutra': Thus, these Three Jewels, in the world with gods, are worthy of being bowed to, worthy of being joined palms to, and have become the supreme field of merit. Thus it is said. The field of benefit is: parents and those who practice the same pure conduct, etc. The field of suffering is: the sick and, the poor and destitute and, the helpless, etc. Furthermore, in the 'Abhidharma Kosha of the Holy Dharma' it says: Not noble ones Also parents and, the sick and the Dharma speakers and, the Bodhisattva of the last birth, offerings are said to be immeasurable. Thus and so on, although many distinctions of the field of giving have been spoken of, mainly the Sangha itself is the supreme field of merit. In the 'Great Thousandfold' it says: Just as planting seeds in a good fertile field, the Sangha Jewel is said to be the most precious. Thus it is said. In the 'Sutra of Remembrance' it says: The field of all the glories of merit, the great purifier of offerings, the one who has become the place of giving, the great one who has become the place of universally vast giving. Thus it is said. In the 'Well-Accomplished Action Tantra' it says: The supreme field is the field of merit, I also prostrate to the Sangha. Thus it is said. In another it also says: To whom offering is meaningful, I also prostrate to the Sangha. As it is said, here, the Sangha, who have well tamed their mind-streams with the three vows, and who are exceedingly superior due to the qualities of scripture and realization, and are manifestly noble, are gathered together as the recipients of the offerings of the patrons, and the pure field is complete. Why is the motivation of giving the thought: If one gives with the mind of wanting to attain the fully enlightened Buddha for the benefit of all sentient beings, it is a pure thought. From the 'Bodhicharyavatara': All possessions together with their fruits, with the mind of giving to all beings, it is said to be the perfection of giving, therefore that is just the mind. Thus it is said. Bodhisattva

A Bodhisattva does not give alms for the sake of fame or verses, nor does he give alms to compete with others, nor does he give alms out of fear of becoming poor, nor does he rely on Indra, the Wheel-Turning King, or Ishvara while giving alms. He also does not give alms while looking forward to the fruit. All alms are given and dedicated for the sake of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. As it is said, purity of thought is essential, so think in this way. The objects to be given are: one should not give livestock to slaughterhouses, nor should one give excellent things to non-excellent people, as giving is prohibited in the sutras, etc., which is impure giving. As it says: Giving excellent things to non-excellent people, giving animals to slaughterhouses, not mixing in poison, weapons, and things that cause harm such as those plundered from others, giving at the right time and without regret, giving pleasingly and not expecting results. Thus, the objects distinguished by merit, accomplished by the Dharma, and suitable for all the Sangha to enjoy, are complete and pure objects. As the Ornament of the Sutras says: The alms given by the sons of the Conqueror with love are faultless and pure, leading to happiness, with subsequent protection, without seeking or attachment. Thus, this almsgiving with the three purities of field, thought, and object is the cause for dedication with the three excellences. Such almsgiving, even if the object is small, if the thought and action are pure, will become the cause of unsurpassed enlightenment. As it is said: A single excellent flower offering, whoever has not fallen into the lower realms, at the time of showing certainty to him, you were like this before, name and non-name. So it is said. Secondly, dedication: Dedicating with a mind of attachment and aversion, for the purpose of overcoming enemies and obtaining objects of attachment, etc., in this life is a perverted dedication; dedicating for the sake of obtaining the happiness and fruits of gods and humans in the next life is also an inferior dedication, so one should not dedicate with any of these as the goal. As the Ornament for Clear Realization says: Not belonging to the three realms. The teacher Ashvaghosa also said: Those roots of virtue that have been accumulated, for fame and renown
