In order to fully accomplish the intentions of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who have descended and abide, and to perfectly fulfill the benefit of oneself and others. Furthermore, for rituals such as those for the well-being of great lamas, the close attendants would say: In order to pacify the adverse conditions and obstacles to the body, speech, and mind of this venerable and holy lama, and to fulfill all his wishes as desired. Or, in order to stabilize his lotus feet and to increase his activities of teaching and practice, which are entirely virtuous, from higher to higher. Furthermore, for rituals such as those for great leaders, it is said: In order to prolong the life of the great leader, the son of the gods, who regards the Dharma as his teacher, and who possesses extraordinary wisdom, and to increase his power, politics, and wealth from higher to higher. Furthermore, for ceremonies such as those for the passing of a great person, depending on the need, it can also be said from the perspective of the deceased: In the past, through the power of accumulating extraordinary merit, he obtained a precious human body in the central, sacred land where the Dharma flourishes. Because of his noble lineage, he was respected by all and became an ornament of the world. However, in general, conditioned phenomena are impermanent, and in particular, the sages have said that life is impermanent, and this has befallen him. Yesterday, he passed away to another world. However, this is not something impossible in the world, but rather the nature of all sentient beings. As the 'Extensive Play Sutra' says: The three realms are impermanent like autumn clouds, the birth and death of beings is like watching a dance, the life of beings is like lightning in the sky, flowing swiftly like water cascading down a steep cliff. Furthermore, the 'Chapter on Impermanence' says: Has anyone been born and not died? Have you seen, heard, or doubted it? Therefore, death is present before all who are born. Therefore, the end of birth is death, the end of gathering is separation, the end of accumulation is exhaustion, and the end of prosperity is decline. Now, he has also left behind all his relatives, friends, houses, possessions, and enjoyments, and has gone to another world. Therefore, those who remain should, with good intentions, perform virtuous deeds and...

Doing so will be very beneficial at that time. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by the Daughter Ratna, "When the time of death arrives, children and relatives do not protect, parents are not relatives, nor are friends useful, at that time only merit protects." And as it is said in the Advice to the King, "When the danger of time comes and the king departs, enjoyments, friends, and relatives do not follow. Wherever a person stays or goes, karma follows like a shadow." Therefore, since both good and evil follow, for the sake of accumulating merit and purifying obscurations for his body, adding that at any time, offering to the Lama Three Jewels who have become a field of merit, offering food and other items to the assembled Sangha, along with dedication and offerings, giving to the poor, etc., and for those who practice good and excellent acts of generosity, also accomplishing them in a pure and clean manner, this is rejoicing. Furthermore, in order to generate joy in the activity of merit, I will briefly speak of the praise of generosity. As it is said in the Condensed Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, "The generosity of a Bodhisattva cuts off the wandering of pretas, poverty, and all afflictions, when practicing, one obtains immeasurable, perfect enjoyment and becomes enlightened." This means that due to stinginess, the karma of being born as a preta is cut off by giving alms, one is liberated from poverty and all afflictions, and when practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, one obtains immeasurable enjoyment. Acharya Chandrakirti said in the Introduction to the Middle Way, "All these people desire manifest happiness, and people's happiness is not without resources, knowing that resources arise only from generosity, therefore the Buddha first spoke of generosity." As it is said, those who desire to enjoy the glory of happiness should strive to accomplish the enjoyment that is the cause of happiness and goodness, and that enjoyment does not arise without a cause, nor does it arise from a reversed cause. So from what does it arise? Relying on the accumulation of the collection of merit, the result of the enjoyment of glory arises completely and abundantly, as it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: The giver is the enjoyment.

Even if one does not desire it, one will encounter very many and excellent enjoyments. As the Omniscient Dharma Lord said: "Giving destroys one's own hoard of miserliness, and causes the wealth of others to increase." Moreover, even in the minds of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, who dwell in a state of peace, giving is the cause for attaining the desired state of perfect peace. As it is said in the "Entering the Middle Way": "Those beings who are base and extremely cruel, with little compassion, who are solely concerned with their own benefit, even the enjoyments they desire arise from giving, becoming a cause of suffering." Therefore, through giving, when will one quickly encounter noble beings? From then on, the cycle of existence will be completely cut off, and with that as the cause, one will go to peace. Not only Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, but also Bodhisattvas who have vowed to benefit beings, their desired goal of the joy of benefiting others also depends on giving. Therefore, for sentient beings who have vowed to benefit others, giving allows them to quickly attain joy. Because the loving and the unloving are different, therefore the words of giving are the most important. Hearing the sound of "How to give" is better than thinking, just as a prince obtains happiness, so do the Buddhas. If entering into peace does not bring happiness, then what need is there to speak of abandoning everything? Like cutting off one's body and giving it away, with my suffering, seeing the suffering of other beings in hell and so on, and personally feeling it, in order to cut off these sufferings, one quickly generates diligence. In short, even the unsurpassed Bodhi, if one gives, one can quickly attain it. As it is said in the Bodhisattva Pitaka: "Giving, it is not difficult to find Bodhi." As it is said in the "Sutra of the Prophecy Given in Response to the Questions of the Noble World Holder": "Therefore, giving material things perfects the accumulation of merit; giving the Dharma perfects the accumulation of wisdom. These two accomplish the all-knowing state." Therefore, one should strive to practice giving, which has inconceivable benefits. Thus, it is very important to dedicate the roots of virtue such as giving to unsurpassed Bodhi, because virtue...
