Seven, thirst eighteen, feeling nineteen, intermediate feeling twenty, extreme feeling twenty-one, sentient being twenty-two, perception twenty-three, the basis of holding twenty-four, individual discernment twenty-five, knowing shame twenty-six, compassion twenty-seven, love twenty-eight, intermediate love twenty-nine, extreme love thirty, together with doubt thirty-one, accumulation thirty-two, jealousy, a total of thirty-three characteristics. Thus it is said. At that time, due to the power of the separation of the white essence within, all appearances as external signs are like the clear, cloudless sky covered with moonlight, appearing as a vast expanse of whiteness. Because the coarse conceptualizations of the object of grasping cease, it is the clear light of emptiness, and because the self-radiance of awareness appears clearly, it is called the wisdom of appearance, which is the first instant. From the Two-in-One Victorious One: "Appearance is non-conceptual, the clear aspect is the abandonment of the object of grasping, arising from the invisible winds, abiding distinctly is the first instant." Thus it is said. When the essence of the red element from the lower part of the central channel rises upwards, the wisdom of appearance dissolves into the increasing, and the forty qualities of the nature of the wisdom of means cease. In the Compendium of Conduct it says: Attachment is one, universal attachment is two, joy is three, intermediate joy is four, extreme joy is five, coarse one is six, extreme satisfaction is seven, wonder is eight, excitement is nine, contentment is ten, embrace is eleven, kissing is twelve, sucking is thirteen, steadfast one is fourteen, diligence is fifteen, pride is sixteen, action is seventeen, seizing is eighteen, strength is nineteen, joy is twenty, union with joy is twenty-one, intermediate union with joy is twenty-two, extreme union with joy is twenty-three, coquetry is twenty-four, various coquetry is twenty-five, strife is twenty-six, goodness is twenty-seven, clear speech is twenty-eight, truth is twenty-nine, untruth is thirty, certainty is thirty-one, non-acceptance is thirty-two, giver is thirty-three, exhortation is thirty-four, bravery is thirty-five, shamelessness is thirty-six, agility is thirty-seven, cruelty is thirty-eight, insubordination is thirty-nine, extreme crookedness, these are the characteristics.

It is exactly forty. Thus it is said. At that time, due to being connected with the red essence within, the outer sign is that the clear sky without clouds is covered by sunlight, appearing reddish or bright red. Because the coarse conceptualization of grasping is extremely empty, it is the luminosity of extreme emptiness. Because the mind appears extremely clear, it is called the wisdom of increasing appearance, which is the second moment. In the Vimalakīrti Nirdeśa Sutra, it is said: Increasing appearance is extremely non-conceptual in appearance. Because it is extremely clear, grasping and conceptualization do not arise. Subtle wisdom is free from dust and non-conceptual. Being together and abiding is the second moment. Thus it is said. When the white and red essences meet in the heart, the seven characteristics of the nature of the wisdom of attainment of appearance cease because of the attainment of the wisdom of increasing appearance and its absorption. In the Compendium of Trainings, it is said: Attachment is one with the intermediate state, forgetfulness is two, confusion is three, non-speaking is four, weariness is five, laziness is six, and doubt is seven. The characteristic of this nature is these seven. Thus it is said. At that time, the power of white and red also vanishes into the dharmadhatu, and a few parts of the life-force wind remain, which control it. Therefore, the outer sign is that the dark path appears black and murky, as if darkness covers the sky. Because the extremely subtle conceptualization of the grasped and the grasper is extremely empty, it is the luminosity of great emptiness. Because all the characteristics of difference disappear on the part of appearance, the mind tends towards cessation, which is called the wisdom of attainment of appearance, which is the third moment. In the Vimalakīrti Nirdeśa Sutra, it is said: The wisdom of attainment of appearance is extremely non-conceptual. It does not abide even in mere clarity, it is extremely subtle. The wind and mind are inseparable, appearing clearly. Remaining still is the third moment. Thus it is said. Thereafter, when the essence of blood and breath within the heart's vein, which is like a white silk thread, is completely absorbed into the bindu Aham, the wisdom of attainment of appearance also dissolves into the luminosity of death. Therefore, although the continuum of all phenomena of existence, which exists in the form of habitual tendencies, remains there, those habitual tendencies do not appear here. All the conceptual thoughts and conventional appearances accumulated in this life dissolve into luminosity. Because the phenomena accumulated in other lives have not yet arisen, for the time being, all the appearances of the grasped and the grasper and the three appearances also cease. Therefore, the outer sign is like a clear sky without clouds.
