Protected by the earth deity, entered the gate of the sacred Dharma, unerringly understanding the supreme instructions, possessing the conducive conditions for practicing the path of liberation—faith, diligence, and courage. Even so, it was said: Generally, birth ultimately leads to death, assembly ultimately leads to separation, and all compounded things have the nature of impermanence. Now, this has befallen you, and yesterday you passed away to the other world. However, this is not something impossible in the world, but it has not transcended the nature of all compounded things. In the "Collection of Special Expositions," it says: Alas! All compounded things are impermanent, they are of the nature of arising and ceasing. Having arisen and ceased, their cessation is bliss. Like a star, a cataract, a lamp, an illusion, dew, a bubble, like a dream, lightning, and a cloud, so are all compounded phenomena. Like the examples of illusion and dream, in general, compounded phenomena are impermanent, and in particular, the life of a person is impermanent. In the "Extensive Play Sutra," it says: The three realms are impermanent like autumn clouds, the birth and death of beings are like watching a dance, the passing of a person's life is like lightning in the sky, flowing swiftly like water cascading down a steep cliff. And in the "Collection on Impermanence," it says: Having been born, who has not died? Have you ever seen, heard, or doubted such a thing? Therefore, death is present before all who are born. Thus it is said. Therefore, no matter how you think about it, it is impermanent. Looking at the external world, the changes of the four seasons are impermanent, day and night change in an instant, so it is momentary impermanence. Contemplating birth, aging, sickness, and death in sequence, relatives are impermanent. Thinking like a shop and its customers, gathering and dispersing are impermanent. You, too, because your past karma has been exhausted and urged on by sudden circumstances, have now passed away from the appearance of this world, passed away from among humans, and have not yet taken on the existence of the next life, so you have arrived at the state called "Bardo." At that time, the most important thing is the instructions of the Bardo. Thus it connects. If it were someone like a lama or a virtuous friend, they would not say these things, but from the beginning would say: Oh, yes. In this way, with pure higher intention, in order to stir up your compassion for those to be tamed, I will say a little and pray.
