I have not elaborated further in writing, fearing it would be too cumbersome. Hereafter, I will explain in detail according to the general approach of the Heart Essence instructions. These are the teachings for diligent ones to attain enlightenment in this lifetime. Secondly, there are four ways to be liberated in the intermediate state (bardo). First, the nature of the bardo: Everything that appears other than the primordial purity (kadag) is the time of the bardo. The appearance of the ground appearing as wisdom is the pure Dharmata Bardo. The confused appearances, encompassed by the six realms, are the impure, confused bardo. Furthermore, that which arises from the sphere of primordial purity, and the mind with its seeds, between the arising and the non-completion of the basis in the sphere, is the bardo. Second, the divisions: It is said in the Extensive Play Sutra: "When divided, there are four aspects." These are: the birth or natural bardo, the bardo of dying, the bardo of dharmata, and the bardo of existence. The first is from the moment of conception in the mother's womb until struck by the disease of death. The second is from the approach of death until the cessation of the inner breath. The third is from the cessation of the inner breath until the arising of the light of clear light and the dissolution of the spontaneous appearances. The fourth is from the dissolution of the spontaneous appearances until the establishment of the future rebirth. Third, the individual ways of taking the path: This is shown through two aspects, example and meaning. First, cutting off clinging in the bardo of the birth place is like a bird entering its nest. Meaning: Relying on the noble lama, cutting off clinging to the instructions he teaches through hearing and thinking, and meditating on the meaning of reality without distortion, cutting off clinging on the experience of awareness, and perfecting the qualities of the four paths and ten bhumis, one manifests the fruit of no more learning. Second, applying clarity in the bardo of dying is like a beautiful woman looking in a mirror. At this time, one recalls the instructions previously meditated upon. How does one apply them? While keeping the key points of the instructions clear in mind regarding the dissolving stages that are in accordance with the dying clear light, one looks at the light with the eyes and places awareness in emptiness and clarity. Thus, the present clear light is like a messenger, and the bardo clear light is like a welcoming guest. The two are liberated like the setting sun and rising moon on the fifteenth day of the month occurring simultaneously. Furthermore, as it is said in the Union of Sun and Moon Sutra: "When earth dissolves into earth, the body becomes heavy and does not digest food."

are exhausted. All strength for standing and walking is depleted. When water dissolves into water, saliva and nasal mucus will flow. Similarly, when fire dissolves into fire, the mouth and nose will become extremely dry, and all bodily heat will dissipate. Similarly, when wind dissolves into wind, the breath will be rapid, the limbs will shake, and the eyes will roll upwards. Whoever exhibits these signs will certainly go to the next life. At that time, the guru's instructions should be integrated into one's own mindstream. As it is said, at this time, one should keenly focus awareness on the meaning of the instructions, without distraction for even a moment. When wind dissolves into consciousness, the two lights, mother and child, meet, and one is liberated into the primordial expanse. Third, in the bardo of dharmata, trusting one's own appearances is like a mother embracing her child. Because the meaning of the instructions has been mastered, no matter how the appearances of dharmata arise, there is no fear, but one recognizes self-appearances as the play of wisdom, and this should be recognized through the five ways of dissolution: First, when consciousness dissolves into space, the light of awareness enters the channels and abides in the eyes. In the first instant, the appearance of primordial purity arises, like an autumn sky without clouds, a clear light without beginning or end. Then, when space dissolves into clear light, without the passage of time, appearances change, and the appearances of the five lights arise, as well as the appearances of the three: sound, light, and rays, pervading space. Then, when clear light dissolves into union, the mandalas of the five families gradually appear in meditation for five days. Then, when union dissolves into wisdom, the robes and bindus of the four joys appear. Then, when wisdom dissolves into spontaneous perfection, upwards, the primordial purity of the dharmakaya and the direct enjoyment body of the five families appear; downwards, the nirmanakaya that tames beings, and so forth, appear in various buddhafields. At that time, no matter how the appearances of dharmata arise, there is no fear, but one is certain that self-appearances are the play of wisdom, like meeting someone one has known before. As the "Union of Sun and Moon" says: "The bardo of dharmata, when this present appearance ceases, there are no aggregates and no defilements. All appearances are a pure land of bliss, self-appearances appear as a pure body. Whoever doubts this obscures the bodies of the buddhas." So it is said. Moreover, there is no necessity for these five ways of dissolution to proceed in a fixed order, but rather according to the faculties of beings.
