Some are chased by the hell guards and executioners, and so on. There, when they reach the foot of that mountain, those whom they cherished in their hearts, such as their parents or relatives, when they lived in the human realm, would call out from the top of that mountain with a clear voice, "Oh, you, come here!" From this, unbearable and intense suffering arises in their minds. When they climb from the foot of that mountain, their skin is peeled off, their flesh is chopped up, blood flows, and their tendons become sparse like wool being combed with a comb. Some get stuck there, and when some reach the top of the mountain, they suffer the pain of having their flesh pecked and their eyes gouged out by iron-beaked birds and crows, and so on. Again, when they are called from the foot of that mountain, they experience suffering as before. When they reach there, they are embraced by wild dogs, venomous snakes, iron-beaked men, and copper-beaked ogresses, and they suffer the pain of having their flesh eaten. Even if they escape from there, they fall into the immeasurable river of ashes, and when they sink to the bottom, their flesh and skin separate, leaving only white bones. When they emerge, they immediately revive. Going in and out of the water, they must endure such suffering until their karma is exhausted. Oh, all of this is the suffering of one's own actions, and there is not even a particle of truth that exists separately outside of that. Therefore, between this life and hell, there is only the movement of breath, and there is no time to rest even for a moment, so one should think intensely about this. As Shantideva said, "Having done the deeds of hell, why do you live so comfortably?" And in the Letter to a Friend, it is said, "The interval of a moment when the breath of a sinner is cut off is enough to see the immeasurable sufferings of hell. Having seen emptiness, who would not be afraid? That mind is the nature of a vajra. Seeing, hearing, remembering, reading, and creating images of hell also cause fear. What need is there to mention the unbearable ripening of karma when one experiences it?" It is also said, "The suffering of being stabbed three hundred times a day with short spears is not even a small fraction of the suffering of hell, so one should strive diligently and not be lazy." Therefore, in the place of the worldly hell.

If one is born, one must endure such suffering, so I think. The guidance on contemplating the suffering of pretas, the second realm of the lower realms, is said to be approximately five hundred yojanas below this Jambudvipa. The realm of pretas is like a desolate city or a rough ravine, like a hollow shell of red copper, unpleasant and a place of constant cold. In the Sutra of Mindfulness, it is said that there are six types of pretas, but if we consider them in terms of categories, there are four: those with common obscurations, those with external obscurations, those with internal obscurations, and those with obscurations related to food and drink. Among them, those with common obscurations are afflicted by hunger and thirst, their bodies are dry and emaciated, their eyes are sunken, their empty intestines are stuck to their backs, their hair stands up like pig bristles, their heads are the size of a palm, their necks are as thin as bowstrings, their bellies are as large as a region, and their limbs are as thin as reeds. Having never tasted any food or drink, their joints crack and burn with fire, and so on. Those with external obscurations wander everywhere in search of food and drink but cannot find it. Sometimes they see a pile of food as big as a mountain, but when they go there, some turn into piles of dirt, and some disappear without a trace. They also see trees with fruit, and driven by desire, they rush towards them, but some turn into black piles of coal, and some turn into rough torches. Some are surrounded by many armed men and cannot enjoy them. When they see springs, some vanish without a trace and turn into gray sand, and some turn into lakes of pus and blood. Others turn into oceans. Furthermore, the great ocean has no actual guardians, but the suffering of being guarded by many armed men all around. Those with internal obscurations have no control over any food or drink. Even if they do, it cannot pass through a mouth as small as the eye of a needle, and it is dried up by the poison in their mouths. Even if it is not dried up, it cannot pass because their necks are too thin. Even if it passes, their bellies, which are as big as a region, cannot be filled, and even if they are filled, their limbs, which are as thin as reeds, cannot bear it. For those with obscurations related to food and drink, as soon as food and drink reaches their mouths, fire blazes from their mouths.
