Even if we contemplate the fact that everything changes from moment to moment, the coming of death is manifestly evident. Death is like a flash of lightning in the sky, unpredictable when it will strike. In short, we should not be lazy or procrastinate with thoughts of what to do tomorrow or the day after, not even for a moment. The reason is that although we have obtained this difficult-to-find precious human rebirth, we are ultimately certain to die. Generally speaking, from birth onwards, there is only a slight difference in the length of life; there are no beings who remain alive and escape death. In the past, present, or future, we have never seen or heard of such a thing, and it is impossible even to have a doubt about whether it exists or not. In short, just as each step taken by an animal being led to the slaughter brings it closer to death, so too do the years, months, days, and even mornings and evenings bring us closer and closer to death, and yet we are unaware of this, which is truly pitiful. Moreover, we cannot be certain that we will not die even tonight. In short, whatever is born will die, whatever gathers will disperse, whatever accumulates will be exhausted, and whatever is high will fall—these four are unavoidable. Nowadays, it cannot be said that the elderly can escape death, nor can it be said that the young will not be struck down by death, nor can it be said that children are not yet ready for death. Death comes without regard for the order of old, middle-aged, and young. Therefore, all the relationships, friends, enjoyments, and so on of this life may seem to bring temporary happiness, but nothing is permanent or lasting, like a pleasant dream of someone who is drowsy. Having not thought about this before, I now realize that we cannot afford to remain idle even for a moment. Although everyone knows that death will eventually come, the thought that we will not die for a while persists until the moment of death. Obscured by this evil thought, we are distracted by the mere trivialities of this life, and our precious human rebirth is wasted. Therefore, we are now like a butter lamp in the midst of a fierce snowstorm, remaining alight only until the wind blows it out. At this time, we must think strongly that we must practice the genuine Dharma, which will surely ensure our well-being in the future. As it is said in the Sutra on Admonishing the King: When death approaches and the king is about to depart, wealth, friends, and relatives will not follow him. Where will beings ultimately go?

Even when walking, karma follows like a shadow. And so on. Nagarjuna said: The earth, Mount Meru, the ocean, the seven suns, even these sentient beings burned by the blazing fire, even if they turn to ashes, they will not become bodies again, let alone extremely weak humans, what more needs to be said? As Ashvaghosa said: On earth or in heaven, having been born and not dying, have you seen any, or heard of any, or doubted any? The Sutra says: Wherever you go, there is no place that can stop death. It is not in the sky, not in the depths of the ocean, not even if you enter the caves of all the mountains. Omniscient Dharma Lord said: This life is impermanent like a clay pot. The appearances of tomorrow and the next life, which will come first is uncertain. Therefore, from today onwards, accumulate the sacred Dharma. In Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior it says: It is unreasonable to sit comfortably thinking that one will not die today. The great teacher also said: This life is impermanent like autumn clouds, friends and relatives are like guests at a market, the Lord of Death is like the evening shadow, the next life is like summer fish fry, the appearances of this life are like last night's dream, desires and enjoyments are like a magician's feast, meaningless actions are like ripples in water. In short, the end of birth is death, the end of companionship is separation, accumulation will be exhausted, and wealth is the cause of decline. In Thug Thig it says: Even if you obtain it in this way, it is not permanent, because the order of old, young, and middle is uncertain. Like a lamp in the wind, a water bubble, a bird on a treetop, similarly without freedom, abandon the immortal, eternal mind, and with strong renunciation, contemplate death. Practice the Dharma from the heart, and abandon the distractions of this life. The Holy One said: In the gaps of distraction, the Lord of Death, the demon, will seize you. Practice now, Dingriwa! Thus it has been said. We do not know which will come first, tomorrow or the next life. All the actions and behaviors of this life are never finished, and desires are small. After death, the only thing that is continuously beneficial is the sacred Dharma, and nothing else. Therefore, when will I die? Do not remain in meditative equipoise thinking this, but in all states of post-meditation, remember death and impermanence.
