Because of possessing the perseverance and pure intention like the earth, its nature is to aspire to attain the complete enlightenment that can liberate all beings. Secondly, like preparing to set out, wishing to attain Buddhahood is aspiration; like actually walking, immediately applying the method of practicing Buddhahood—the conduct of a Bodhisattva—is engagement. As it says in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*: "The mind of enlightenment, in brief, Should be known to have two aspects: The mind that aspires to enlightenment, And the mind that engages in enlightenment. As the difference is known Between wanting to go and actually going, Likewise, the wise should understand The distinction between these two in sequence." The difference between equality and exchange of self and others is: Because both self and others are equally cherished, therefore, the wish to attain Buddhahood oneself and then place all sentient beings in Buddhahood is equality. Exchange is to eliminate and take on its obstacles, cherishing others more than oneself, giving one's own happiness to others, and taking the suffering of others upon oneself. Thirdly, with love, seeing all sentient beings as kind parents from past lives, and with great compassion for them being tormented by suffering, thinking: I should liberate them from suffering and place them in the state of unsurpassed liberation. But because I do not have that power now, therefore, the aspiration to attain the Buddhahood that can liberate all beings is the aspiration Bodhicitta. For this purpose, thinking: I will practice the profound path of the three Vajra yogas, this is engaging Bodhicitta. Then, from the depths of one's heart, recite "The insurmountable existence," etc., and combine it with the in and out breaths, and practice the giving and taking of happiness and suffering. In the key instructions, it says: "Meditate on immeasurable Bodhicitta." This means that for the sake of immeasurable sentient beings, it is also acceptable to meditate on immeasurable aspiration and engagement Bodhicitta. If you want to practice the four immeasurables separately, then wishing sentient beings to encounter unprecedented happiness and virtue is love; wishing to be free from the suffering that is currently possessed, and to eliminate the cause of suffering in the future, is compassion; the joy caused by rejoicing and being happy that sentient beings possess happiness now is joy; the difference in the mind of equanimity, which is caused by the previous three, without hatred and in accordance with non-attachment, is equanimity.

In general, although there are statements that loving-kindness and the like are not abandoners of the seeds of afflictions, here, the four immeasurables of a Bodhisattva skilled in means are those with the aspect of the selflessness of phenomena, therefore, they also act as an antidote that destroys the seeds and habitual tendencies of afflictions. Fourth, from the benefits and precepts of generating the mind of enlightenment: The benefits are: As soon as the mind of enlightenment is generated, one obtains the name of a prince, a Bodhisattva, and becomes an object of offering for beings. The three trainings and all qualities are the basis and foundation, and all virtues go along with liberation. Limitless sins are exhausted in an instant. Even if one does a small root of virtue, merit increases greatly. Having grasped the path of liberation, one will definitely go to complete enlightenment, and so on, obtaining immeasurable benefits. As it is said in the Secret Sutra of the Thus-Gone One: Whatever merit there is in the mind of enlightenment, if it had form, it would fill all of space, and it would be even greater than that. The precepts are: In general, all the practices to be undertaken become precepts for the mind of enlightenment. In particular, in the entering vows, one abandons the four or fourteen root downfalls, and so on. The precepts of practice are to train in the six perfections and the four ways of gathering disciples, and so on. After generating the mind of enlightenment, the most important precepts are to abandon the mind of renouncing sentient beings and to generate a mind that is not in harmony with it, because these will abandon the mind of enlightenment from the root, so one must strive to avoid them. In all lifetimes, one must abandon the four black dharmas that cause one to forget the mind of enlightenment, and train in the four white dharmas that cause one not to forget, these are just brief explanations. Second, the uncommon preliminaries are three: The teaching on the hundred syllables for purifying obstacles and sins; the teaching on the mandala for accumulating favorable conditions; the root of blessings that is the non-duality of accumulation and purification, the teaching on the guru yoga. The first is: Purifying obscurations, reciting the Vajrasattva mantra. In general, the cause of all unwanted things falling upon us and the failure to achieve desired goals is sin and non-virtuous actions. Although these actions are small at the time of the cause, they increase greatly at the time of the result. The result of non-virtuous actions ripens only as suffering, and it does not transfer from the one who performed the action to another.
