One should contemplate well on how the fruits of good and bad ripen into happiness and suffering, and make sure to adopt and abandon without error. Due to the power of karma, no matter where one is born in the six realms of samsara, there is no happiness other than suffering. Therefore, one should remember the general and specific faults of suffering in samsara, and without being attached to worldly happiness and prosperity, one should think from the bottom of one's heart that this time one must attain the supreme state of liberation. As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: "If a fire suddenly breaks out on your head or clothes, even abandoning the things you are doing to stop it, you should strive to ensure that there is no rebirth. There is no other Dharma more important than this." Therefore, one should study extensively the preliminary teachings such as the Precious Ladder by the venerable Lama Tsongkhapa, and train the mind. The measure of proficiency is: if one recognizes that all actions other than the sacred Dharma are meaningless wheels of suffering, and one develops a revulsion towards this life and samsara like turning vomit inside out, then the preliminary practice has hit the point, and the foundation of the Dharma is solid. The second is: "To turn away from the wrong path, take refuge in the Three Jewels." The cause of taking refuge is: being threatened by fear and seeking a refuge to protect from it. Furthermore, the non-Buddhists hold worldly gods such as Vishnu and Shiva, which are not pure refuges, as ultimate refuges and place their hopes on them. This is taking refuge by entering the wrong path. Because they cannot protect from the suffering of samsara, one must turn away from them. In order to protect oneself and all sentient beings from the terrible suffering of samsara and place them in the bliss of supreme liberation, one must have hope in the infallible refuge, the Three Jewels, and promise to take them as refuge. This is the meaning of taking refuge. If one does so, one will be protected from all harm and will also obtain all perfect qualities. As it is said: "The Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha are the supreme refuge. By relying on them, one can be liberated from the great fear of existence." Therefore, there is the identification of the refuge object, how to take refuge, the extent of taking refuge, benefits, and precepts. The first part is also divided into cause and effect.

From the perspective of the two (the dependent and the object of dependence), the object of dependence is: the Three Jewels encompassed by the other's continuum, and in order to accomplish the fruit, refuge is taken in the manner of a teacher and a companion on the path. The fruit of the object of dependence is: one's own mind-essence abides in the nature of the Three Jewels, and in order for it to become manifest in the future, one engages in virtue with aspiration and enters into the cause. Among these, the explanation of the refuge object of the object of dependence is: the Three Jewels that have already appeared in the continuum of others. Because they can protect from the fear of samsara and can establish one in the unsurpassed fruit of liberation. Among these, the Three Jewels are: the Buddha, the essence of the three bodies, possessing two purities, ultimate, and complete with two benefits; the Dharma, the truth of uncontaminated purity, encompassed by cessation and path; and the scriptures that express and reveal this truth as objects of expression, appearing and sounding in names, words, and letters, encompassed by both scripture and realization; the Sangha, the noble sons of the Buddha who possess the qualities of actual realization and liberation, and those who are in accordance with them, the Hearers and Solitary Realizers who are on the Great Vehicle's path of accumulation and preparation. The ultimate refuge is: the Buddha alone, because he is also the ultimate Dharma and Sangha. As it is said in the Uttaratantra, "For those who go for the sake of the ultimate meaning, the refuge is only the Buddha, because the Sage possesses the Dharmakaya, and the Sangha is also ultimate in him." Thus, on top of the general Three Jewels, in the Mantrayana, the special object, the Three Roots, are added, thus forming the sixfold refuge. The Lama is the embodiment of all the Jewels. The Yidam is the Buddha. The Dakinis, Dharma Protectors, and Wisdom Beings are included within the Sangha, but refuge is taken in them specifically in order to highlight their function, because in this path of Secret Mantra, the Lama is the object for requesting blessings, the Yidam is the object for requesting accomplishments, and the Dakinis, Dharma Protectors, and Wisdom Beings are the companions for accomplishing activities. How do they protect? One requests the Buddha as a teacher, and because one practices the Dharma he taught, one is liberated from all fears, therefore the Dharma is the actual refuge. One requests the Sangha as companions who guide the way. And in the Secret Mantra, all of this is done by the Lama himself, so the Lama is the embodiment of all the refuges. As it is said in the Vinayasamuccaya, "The Lama is the Buddha, the
