When it is seen as permissible to rely upon, the Empowerment Ritual states: "If it is permissible after thorough examination, then grant permission." As it is said, the lama should take the disciple under his care, and the disciple should also rely upon the lama by pleasing him with the three doors (body, speech, and mind). As the Rangshar states: "Thus, rely upon the oral instruction master, with your own body and precious substances, with things that are extremely rare." Secondly, regarding making a faithful disciple a vessel, there are two aspects: empowerment and how to keep the vows. First, empowerment. The Root Tantra of Manjushri states: "Four great vows are taught: the vow of the correct view of higher realms, the vow of refuge, the door to liberation, the vow of generating the mind of enlightenment, the entrance to the Great Vehicle, the vow of empowerment, the entrance to the Mantra Vehicle. These are indispensable and must not be transgressed, hence they are called vows. Either study these four in order, or empowerment alone accomplishes all purposes. Therefore, those who wish to enter the Vajra Vehicle must definitely receive empowerment." As the Empowerment Ritual also states: "That which ripens one on the great path of mantra is empowerment." And as the Wrathful Lightning states: "In the supreme secret mandala, perform the actions of entering, requesting accomplishments, and empowerment. By this, even in this very life, one will attain Buddhahood, what need is there to mention other accomplishments?" And as the Vajra Garland Tantra also states: "Initially, when a disciple, if the intelligent one correctly empowers, then at that time, for the yoga of the completion stage, at that time, he becomes a vessel. If devoid of correct empowerment, even if the practitioner knows the meaning of the tantra, the teacher and disciple equally, will go to the unbearable great hell." Etc., as it is extensively taught in all the tantras, therefore, empowerment must definitely be given at the beginning of listening to the explanation of the tantras and meditating on the two stages. Regarding the nature of empowerment, its etymology, its divisions, and the ritual of how to empower. First, the nature of empowerment is: to ripen the wisdom of one's own nature, which is to be attained, to manifest or to make the potential for certain arising to ripen. As the Hevajra Tantra states: "By what is empowerment given to whom? Empowerment is for the sake of obtaining power in the tantras." Secondly, the etymology is: the word Abhiṣeka
