Those who have matured before entering the path of mantra, needless to say, after that. If not, before the wisdom of the two stages arises, it is absolutely necessary that these also arise in the continuum, no more elaboration. Second, there are three points in explaining the stages of the uncommon path: relying on the lama as the root of the path; having a faithful disciple as a vessel; pouring the essence of nature into that vessel; the classification of the two stages of the path. First, there are four points: the characteristics of the lama to be relied upon; the characteristics of the disciple who can rely on him; with what kind of intention to rely on him; what is the essence of the way to rely on him. The first point is, in the empowerment ritual, it says: "Having obtained empowerment, realizing the inner and outer suchness, the teacher with all the qualities." It means that the mind-stream is matured through empowerment, abiding in samaya, having the perfection of the ten suchnesses of outer and inner, or having the realization of realizing the suchness of the profound path, therefore having the ability to guide disciples with skillful means and compassion. That is, being able to cut off the addition with the teachings of words, being able to generate realization with the introduction of meaning, being able to prevent impure appearances with blessings, being able to eliminate obstacles with experience and increase strength with realization, that is, having four characteristics. In addition, the General Sutra says: "Examining the characteristics of the teacher is, essence of wisdom, you listen, stable and gentle, without deceit, knowing the union of the tantra of secret mantra, skilled in the work of drawing mandalas, completely knowing the ten suchnesses, giving fearlessness to sentient beings, always rejoicing in the Great Vehicle, that is said to be the teacher." And, the ten suchnesses come from the Vajra Heart Ornament Tantra: "The ritual of dispelling the two, secret and wisdom, prajna, and the ritual of union, the recitation of the vajra of the torma, the ritual of fierce accomplishment, perfection and the accomplishment of the mandala, are the ten secret suchnesses. Mandala, meditation, mudra, posture, standing posture, sitting posture, recitation, fire offering, offering, union of activities, and again the way of gathering, are the ten outer suchnesses." The second point is, having faith, diligence, wisdom, generosity, and faith in practice and vows.

They are disciples who are qualified vessels for accomplishing the supreme attainments. As stated in the Gongdü: "One who delights in practice and meditation, who always respects the lama, who makes offerings to the lama at all three times, is a disciple endowed with qualities." That is the third point. The fourth is to rely on the lama with a deep and unwavering intention to seek liberation. The fifth is to rely on the sacred lama without separation, like a medicine for reviving the dead. Rely on him without hypocrisy or abruptness, like your own heart. Rely on him without limiting your service and respect, like a wish-fulfilling jewel. As stated in the Sutra Ornament: "One should rely on a spiritual friend through gain, respect, service, and practice." In short, one should regard the guru as the embodiment of all Buddhas, the sixth Vajradhara, and rely on him accordingly. As stated in the Vajra Mirror Tantra: "Vajrasattva is the lord of the mandala, the lama is equal to all Buddhas." And in the Guhyasamaja Tantra: "Son of lineage, all Tathagatas and Bodhisattvas should regard the mind of enlightenment as a vajra." Furthermore, a disciple who is on the path of the vase empowerment should generate faith by seeing all of the guru's aggregates, elements, and sense bases as the gross wheel of deities of the mandala. A disciple who is on the path of the secret empowerment should generate faith by seeing all of the guru's subtle channels and energies as the nature of clear light and emptiness. A disciple who is on the path of the wisdom empowerment should, on top of that, generate faith by seeing all phenomena as the nature of great bliss. A disciple who is on the path of the fourth empowerment should rely on the guru with a confident faith that recognizes that the nature of all phenomena, the very essence of the Sugata, is inseparable from the lama. These faiths naturally arise when the wisdom of the four empowerment paths is generated in one's being. Otherwise, even if the wisdom of the path has not been generated in one's being, after receiving the four empowerments, one should still strive to cultivate the corresponding aspects of faith. Before receiving empowerment, as stated in the Fifty Verses on the Guru: "The hero should first examine the relationship between the guru and the disciple." Therefore, one should examine carefully.
