Those emaciated by hunger and thirst, should also remember the pretas. The suffering of ignorance is extremely abundant, contemplate and remember the suffering of animals. Abandon those causes and practice the causes of happiness. Thus it is said. So, if one is born in the heavens, is that enough? If you think so, it is not enough. Although it is said to be heaven in relation to the three lower realms, for example, fire, whether large or small, does not escape the burning of heat. In those places too, in general, people also have birth, old age, sickness, and death, poverty, wealth disappearing, gatherings and separations, existence and non-existence, beatings and so on. If it is an Asura, it is constantly tormented by fighting. The gods of desire have the suffering of death and falling. In the two upper realms, although there is no manifest suffering for a while, the suffering of pervasive conditioning exists as a seed. When the karmic force of each one is exhausted, in the end, in the three lower realms and so on, suffering will not cease, and one must remember it. Therefore, in this place of the three realms of samsara, no matter where one is born, high or low, one does not escape the nature of suffering. Wherever one dwells, it is a place of suffering. Whoever one associates with, is a friend of suffering. Whatever one enjoys, one does not escape the enjoyment of suffering. That is also said in the Uttaratantra: Just as there is no fragrance in impurity, there is no happiness in the five realms. Its suffering is always like fire, weapons, salt, and other tactile sensations. As it is said. Therefore, in this place of the three realms of samsara, no matter where one is born, high or low, it is an accumulation of suffering, a welcoming and sending of suffering, a cradle of suffering, and one does not escape the nature of suffering. For example, like a patient with constant pain and groaning, there is not even a moment to get a chance of happiness, so like a criminal escaping from prison, or a wild animal escaping from a trap, in short, one must renounce samsara from the depths of one's heart, like a person with vomiting sickness seeing food, with involuntary renunciation and strong world-weariness, thinking that this time I must be liberated from the ocean of samsara, and if I do not strive to practice the supreme Dharma, then I am sure to die, one must think strongly like this. The guidance of taking refuge that distinguishes oneself from the wrong path is: The root is: From the bondage of the suffering of existence, The refuge is none other than the Three Jewels, Therefore, take refuge in the Three Jewels.

The refuge is supreme. In the space in front, visualize the refuge field clearly. From the depths of your heart and bones, take refuge. Abandon all that should be abandoned, and accept all that should be accepted. Keep the refuge deities inseparable from yourself. Thus it is said. Therefore, the only ones who can protect from the terrifying suffering of samsara are the Three Jewels. With this in mind, relax your body and mind, thinking that you are taking refuge and relying on the Three Jewels. Visualize the place where you are as a pure land, vast and spacious, level like lapis lazuli, with golden eye-like patterns drawn on it. When pressed, it yields; when lifted, it bounces. It is vast and without limit. In that space in front of you, visualize a wish-fulfilling tree with a single root and five branches that split into the center and four directions. The branches are lush with leaves, flowers, and fruits, and they are bent low with abundance. In the heart of the center, on a high and wide jeweled throne supported by lions, with a lotus, sun, and moon cushion, visualize your root guru, clear and complete with all the marks and signs. Above his head, visualize the lineage gurus stacked high, like a collection of jewels, as the embodiment of all the Jewels. Therefore, on each of the branches that split into the four directions, set up high and wide thrones. In front of each throne, visualize the special Buddha Jewel, Guru Vajravarahi (རྡོ་རྗེ་ཐོད་ཕྲེང་རྩལ།, Vajra Thötreng Tsal, Diamond Skull Garland Power), surrounded by the deities of the four classes of tantra. On the right, visualize the teacher, Shakyamuni Buddha, in the attire of a supreme emanation body, surrounded by the thousand Buddhas of this Fortunate Aeon, as the common Buddha Jewel. In the back, visualize the special Dharma Jewel in the form of stacked scriptures. On the branch to the left, visualize the common Sangha Jewel, the communities of the Great and Lesser Vehicles, bodhisattvas, pratyekabuddhas, shravakas, and other noble beings. In between them, visualize the special Sangha, dakinis, dharma protectors, and those with the eye of wisdom. Think that all of these do not move from the display of bliss and emptiness in the heart of the root guru, and that their compassion is without increase or decrease, and their wisdom is without high or low. This is the object of refuge. And the person taking refuge visualizes his father from this life on his right, his mother on his left, and his enemies in front. Behind him are his friends, and all others who are biased.
