Secondly, the cause of the river of lineage, similarly, the great breath exhaled on the path of seeing is the source of the arising water, the attainment of great prophecies on the path of meditation is the river of fame, and the completion of great abilities on the final path is the cause of the river of completion. As stated in the Gongdü: "Lord of Lanka, the cause for that is the five great yogas: the yoga of aspiration, the yoga of distinguishing great lineages, the yoga of exhaling great breaths, the yoga of attaining great prophecies, and the yoga of perfecting great abilities. These should be understood." Therefore, secondly, the measure of the time of attainment is: the complete understanding of the ten aspects to be learned is accumulation; the path of directly seeing the suchness of the mind as it is; the path of meditation where one is not bewildered by anything to be known due to familiarity with hundreds of thousands of doors of samadhi; and the final path where one is free from fear due to the perfection of abilities, reaching the limit. These should be applied sequentially as the measure for attaining the empowerment of the four rivers. From that, "Lord of Lanka, the measure of attainment is as follows: complete understanding of what is to be learned, seeing suchness, not being timid about anything to be known, and being free from whatever fear." So it is said. Humdze in the Kun Dü Ka-drel, separating the two accumulations and combining them with the four rivers, explains the final path as the fruit of empowerment, saying, "These empowerments are also empowerments of yogis. For the yogi of aspiration, it is the outer empowerment. For the one who distinguishes great lineages, it is the inner empowerment. For the one who exhales great breaths, it is the practice empowerment. For the one who attains great prophecies, it is the secret empowerment. The perfection of great abilities is the fruit of empowerment." So it is said. Thirdly, the obstacles to not attaining are: being arrogant without understanding the meaning of what is to be learned; being uncertain because the meaning is not definitely understood; clinging to aspects of what is to be meditated upon and what is to be known; and the inability to generate the abilities of wisdom and qualities. These are the obstacles to not attaining. As stated in the Gongdü: "What is not attained? That which is arrogant, that which is uncertain, that to which one clings as supreme, and that in which it does not arise." So it is. Fourthly, the teacher from whom one attains is the extraordinary lama who has become the object of worship for all.

Having obtained the objects of realization and seen the truth, and actually receiving prophecy through musical instruments, and seeing the face of the Sugata through the valid means of great skillful wisdom, and the Sugatas who have already obtained certainty in reality, are the masters who bestow the four river empowerments in sequence. From that, the Lord of Lanka said: The places are stupas, musical instruments, valid means, and certainty. Thus. Fifth, the disciple to whom the empowerment is given is: the higher five paths empower the lower ones, that is, having become the lineage of the conquerors by practicing mindfulness and consistent activity, and having realized the meaning and become fearless by perfecting the skill of wisdom and samadhi, and having received prophecy and possessing confidence, thereby generating compassion for the benefit of others, and having perfected great skill and having made everything subject to one's power, are the vessels for bestowing the four river empowerments in sequence. From that, the Lord of Lanka said: Whoever becomes a vessel is: having become a lineage, and having perfected skill, and generating compassion, and having made others subject to one's power. Thus. Sixth, there are two kinds of differences in what is obtained by what. From that, the Lord of Lanka said: The difference is like this: obtained by skill and obtained by empowerment. Therefore, those with sharp faculties obtain it all at once through the skill of intelligence, and those with dull faculties obtain it gradually through empowerment. The first is: For the sake of one's own benefit, having realized the meaning of the secret of the minds of all the conquerors, the reality of the indivisibility of the three mandalas, and being able to clearly show it for the benefit of others, therefore, he is the one who has obtained the most excellent of what is to be obtained, having become the master who controls the three realms. From that, the Lord of Lanka said: Obtaining by skill is like this: the secret mind of the conquerors, having realized it, to whomsoever one clearly explains it, is the best of all empowerments, and the three realms empower that. Because it is said. The second is: From that, the Lord of Lanka said: What is obtained by empowerment is: one should know what is beneficial to whom, and only whose ability. The meaning of what is said, in the Commentary Armor of Darkness, is: having become the seed of merit, therefore abandoning bad seeds, and being able to benefit oneself and others through the skill of the three doors. That is, the vase empowerment and so on, and the vast explanations and so on. Thus it is said, and that also
